Driving home, the fan started making a racket. I turned the AC off, so fan didn't run. When I got home I saw a bit of free play in the fan. I'm assuming it needs replacement, or at least a new bearing? Anyone know how much this repair should cost?
The chain auto parts stores sell a replacement assembly, the fan and the plastic frame that holds it, which includes the coolant overflow tank, advance auto's costs $140.
A shop might charge about an hour to do the job, so somewhere between $50 and $100 lab or depending on the shop rates. It looks like a simple thing to replace, disconnect the hose from the overflow tank to the radiator, disconnect the electrical connector for the fan, unhook the wire from the fan frame, and remove the four bolts holding the frame on. Then reverse that to put the new one in. Some care should be taken when working around the radiator, first that it;s not hot, and second to avoid banging the soft aluminum radiator fins.
Is the play that you noticed between the plastic fan frame and the radiator&car body, or play between the fan blades and the fan frame? On mine, the frame seems loosely mounted to the radiator, but the fan seems firm to the fan frame
The same thing just started happening to my '07 Vibe, and when I looked it on the weekend, I noticed that the fan has now separated itself from the assembly that holds it in place.
It all looks plastic to me, so I was wondering if the fan shaft can be adhered back into place somehow?
