With the Vibe idling in drive --A/C ON-- where does your tach sit and the same reading with A/C OFF. I'm wondering if I am idling fast-- EX--675 RPM with A/C ON vs 650 with A/C OFF.I notice a slight RPM increase when compressor is engaged. Also on a cold start during fast idle where does your tach sit?Need to compare.
I'm working on getting some numbers from my Vibe today for you. I will update the thread when I do. Okay.. got the info: Cold Idle - In Park - No A/C - around 1900 RPM for 1-2 minutes, then decreases Warm Idle - In Drive - No A/C - around 800 RPM Warm Idle - In Drive - With A/C - around 900 RPM Warm Idle - In Park - With A/C - around 900 RPM Warm Idle - In Park - No A/C - around 800 RPM Base Vibe - Auto TransmissionThe RPM's are going to increase as the compressor puts a load on the engine.
Thanks for the post---As I thought RPM's seem a little high to me--- But maybe thats the way it is designed????Other owner --kick some input my way. Thanks
When the car is first started, you will notice a slightly high rpm, and then it will drop to its normal idle moments later. Its normal. Yet another reason to wait a few moments before slammin the car in gear and taking off. Thats just harsh on the merchandise. Let the rpms level out before peeling out, so the engine and trans has some lubrication before higher "driving" rpms.

How long should it take for a engine to warm up and for RPM to drop to reasonable level ?In my case, it gets quite cold overnight ( -5 c or so for now ) and my Vibe lives outdoors, I sit in my car for 5 minutes and the engine still runs around 1900 RPM.Is that right ? And what's the "reasonable level" for RPM when the engine is considered warm ? thank you

You only have to run it for about 30 seconds. Seems quick but if you actually sit and time it, it is a sufficient amount of time to ensure that oil has reached the valve train at the top most part of the motor. I hate the fact it takes so long to get the idle down , seems a bit high for too long, but having to wait for the the second oxygen sensor to heat up, I guess its what we pay for better emissions. Vibe,I used an OTC Genisys scan tool and got about the same readings when hot, i'll get some cold readings in the am.

I had a strange cold engine idle last night when I started my vibe. I know all about the 2000rpm idl at first that drops after a couple of minutes but this was bizarre. I started the car and the RPMS went from 1900 to 2100 then back and forth for about a minute before settling down. Temp was 3 degrees C, parked level, no defrost on yet or wipers. Anyone else experienced up and down revs at idle?
Just purchased my second Vibe, 2005, 5 spd. I have been watching my rpms and have seen some disturbing things. All observations are well after warm up, without defrost or AC on. When I pull the clutch in the RPMs will drop 800 then back to 1200 and then back and forth some times. This was consistently for a 70 mile trip. I have had instances when it first dropped to 1800 and then down to what I believe is the appropriate 800. Going to keep a close eye on it because my 2004 did not have this variability, albeit an automatic.
If the clutch is in while you're moving, AC or not, RPMs will be higher than idle. When the car is going, the car will idle about 1200 for me, AC or not, while in neutral or with the clutch in. When resting, it'll be around 600-800.

I forget why, someone did tell me once, but smaller displacement engines Idle higher during warm up then larger displacement engines. I think it has to do with Momentum of the internals. Ive had my share of small cars and medium cars and all the small cars Ive owned with a 2.0 litre or less engine have cold idled around 2000
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Thanks for the information, what you are saying seems to go with what is happening. Do you have the technical information on why? This is my first manual that I have seen this on.
No idea why. My only guess would be to keep the syncros at speed? I dunno.. Maybe someone has more technical info..i'm just guessin'.
