Another Vibe meets its demise :(

SEYMOUR, Ind. (June 25, 2015) – A six-vehicle accident in Jackson County closed I-65 for almost six hours Wednesday night.

State Police say a semi was traveling north on I-65 around 4:40 p.m. when it rear-ended a Pontiac Vibe, causing it to spin around in the emergency lane. The semi continued on and was and struck a GMC Yukon, which then crashed into a ditch. The semi then hit Nissan Altima, pushing it forward into the back of a Toyota Rav4 and a box truck. The Nissan became wedged under the box truck after the semi pushed it forward.

The driver of the semi told police traffic stopped suddenly in front of him and he did not have enough time to stop. He was transported to Schneck medical Center in Seymour with a hand injury. Two other people in Yukon also went to Schneck with minor injuries.

Police say the driver of the Vibe was taken by helicopter to Methodist Hospital with head and leg injuries. The driver of the Altima had to be removed from the vehicle and was taken to Louisville hospital with internal injuries; however, her 10-month-old was uninjured.

The two people in the Rav4 were not injured and the driver of the box truck was treated for back pain at the scene and released.

State police responded to the crash and was assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff Department, Crothersville and New Albany Police Departments, along with Seymour and Vernon Township Fire Departments.

I-65 reopened around 10 p.m. Wednesday, after about five and half hours.

Glad to hear the drivers of all vehicles survived. Wonder how fast the semi was going and how close they were to full load. Appears the crumple zones did their job.

So terrible to see this, all of those involved are in my thoughts.

Being not too far from that area, it seems like that stretch of I-65 has had its share of serious crashes lately. :(

Nightmarish. Honestly, don't you think a truck drive who pays attention can slow down enough to avoid the worst of this? He could look way ahead over that Vibe. Hopefully they confiscated the cell phone just to see what it did at that time.

Ouch !!! I was thinking the same thing from a visibility standpoint. Sitting in a semi, you've got the best view of everything around you ... especially directly in front of you. Fatigue? Cell phone? Passenger distraction? Hope all pull through! That poor Vibe won't even be a parts car for anybody either.
