Power Steering Pump

Post by dnoishere »

...so I have a leak that I believe is coming from the power steering pump. I have a repair manual but does anybody have any hints/tricks etc on replacing it? What size are the mounting bolts/nuts?

Yeah I definitely wouldn't try replacing the seals. Remember to disconnect the lines at the rack and blow shop air through them to clean out the gunk. And be VERY careful when you're threading the lines back into the pump. They are very easy to cross thread. When you're finished with the install turn the steering wheel all the way to the left before you fill it up. That will allow the fluid to fill the rack and save you time on the bleeding process. Then with the front of the vehicle raised turn the steering wheel lock to lock at a slow/medium pace about 30-40 times or more to remove air from the rack. Going too fast can cause the reservoir to pressurize and squirt out fluid. If don't get all the air out before you start the engine the trapped air will mix with the fluid and foam up. When that happens you'll have to wait a few hours and try the bleeding process again.

...so I got the pump off...not real easy but did it...now my new pump didn't come with the pulley. Thought I could pull it off old one and put it on the new one....well, no can do. There is no collar on the pulley, it's pressed on I guess. Tried with 3 jaw puller but that started to bend the pulley...Anybody know how I can get it off and back on without damage? I also can't seem to find anywhere that sell just the pulley either. Tried to save some money and buy just the pump. Should have just bought one with a pulley attached...on the bright side I flushed the fluid.

You need a special tool to remove the pulley. It's just called a 'power steering pulley remover/installer'. You should be able to rent it from autozone.

...they don't have that type of puller...I checked autozone, o'riellys, advance auto...there is no collar for that tool to hook onto...that was the problem...
