Necroing this thread because I have some more helpful info.
Just swapped these bulbs in my 2004 vibe over the weekend and it was a pain. I am upgrading the stereo in the car so I figured this was the right time to do it.
Can confirm that the 90072-02005 part number works in my '04; I ordered OEM bulbs from ToyotaPartsDeal because I didn't want to risk Amazon cheapos going out in a year or two. The originals lasted for at least 15 years so I figured I'd use the same.
This video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44UV_UF-_Wk has a great walkthrough of tearing down the center console. Once the center console was completely apart (you don't have to remove the panel around the shifter base unless you want to change that bulb) then I started working on the climate bulbs:

The bulb can be rotated out from the front using a very small flathead screwdriver. Just push counterclockwise on one of the locking tabs and it should rotate free.
Getting the new bulbs back in is the big challenge. This youtube video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGEINLBk2C8 was rather helpful; the author mentioned using a small screwdriver and some blue-tack to keep the bulb on. I ended up using a fine phillips head 90 degree screwdriver that I randomly had. The new bulbs seem to have a phillips cross section in the back that makes it a bit easier to turn and install them.

Here is a view of the rear of the bulbs from inside the dashboard. I tried really hard not to drop my phone...

The challenge is that both bulbs are somewhat recessed inside the housing (when viewing from the rear) so they have to be held on the end of something pointy to get them positioned in to the mount holes. Here is the climate control panel from the top, looking down:

You'll notice that the left hand side has a big plastic bit in the way; maneuvering the bulb and screwdriver around that without bumping anything was a game of "operation" to say the least. You can actually see the right hand side bulb (dimly) in that photo.
And for good measure, here is the view of the back of my replacement bulbs:

I hope this proves to be helfpul to someone else! We've got almost 20 years on this thread now
