Rear door power lock - will unlatch but no lock

Post by tjodork »

My daughter has a 2004 Vibe (not GT) and when she presses the lock button on her remote they rear does not lock (and I hear nothing in that area), however when she presses the hatch button I can hear it make a noise to unlatch.
We've also tried the power door locks in the car and that will also not lock the rear hatch.

How is it supposed to work.... does the lock button on remote lock the all doors including hatch or does the Hatch button supposed to toggle from lock to unlock ?

How could the unlatch work and the lock not work....isn't it the same motor ?

Would really love it if someone could explain how this is supposed to work and what might be wrong.

Thanks much

The hatch should lock and unlock with the lock and unlock buttons on the key fob and with the door mounted buttons.

The hatch button should ONLY open the glass window part of the hatch, not the whole hatch. There are two separate motors in the hatch, one for the whole metal hatch and one for just the window. So does the hatch button on the fob unlock the whole hatch, and not the glass? Are you the original owner? If the hatch button is not working as I described, it sounds like someone rewired the rear hatch to operate differently. The hatch button on the fob should only open the window latch, letting you flip up the glass window, and does not "lock" anything. The window locks itself when it is closed.

Sounds like you need to open up the hatch and look at the wiring in it to see what is mixed up, or it is possible the lock actuator on the whole hatch is broken or disconnected.

Good luck on it!

Thanks for the excellent details !! My daughter bought this used and so without knowing how its SUPPOSED to work....its really hard to figure out what to fix.
With your answers I fully understand.
The hatch button DOES unlock the glass door and the rear hatch power lock just is totally dead.... will open up back and debug.

Thanks!

welcome to genvibe

Hopefully it's something easy like somebody unplugged it for some reason, let us know what you find when you dig into it. I think that large gray plastic trim that covers the whole lower interior of the hatch is just held in place by some plastic body pins, should just pull off

If you didn't get an owners manual with the car, you can download one from viewtopic.php?t=755" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
also check out the getting to know brochure for your model year, for one year, they put some info in those that's not in the owners manual
