Post-recall replacement passenger inflator wiring harness

Post by ColonelPanic »

Started looking at the recall work that was done on this car... Hmm... Does anyone have a picture of this general area I can use for comparison?

Image

I have no idea what has happened here -- while I can not recall the exact routing of the inflator harness pre-recall replacement, I can assure you it was not originally installed in the glove box.

Image

So now when opening and closing the glove box, the wiring is pushed or pulled on by the glove box. I do not imagine that is a good thing...

Don't know if the new inflator's wiring is longer or if the dealer did not route the wiring properly. At any rate, we've gone from not being able to use the front seat to not being able to use the glove compartment. Have any Vibers with Takata's latest wares installed observed the same?

I'm not touchin' it, the dealer is going to have to handle this.

I dug up ragingfish's dash removal howto... The pics are no longer found in the thread, but they can be found on the wayback machine. 8-)

Yup, here's the problem:

Just to bring this to a close (if anyone runs into this in the future,) here's where it ended up:

A mechanic at the dealer simply popped the plugs loose from the dash brace, disconnected, rerouted the cabling and snapped it all back together.

Does anyone have a inclusive list of VINS for the 2009-10 Vibes? With all the Matrixes recalled, it's hard to believe any of ours escaped and a friend has gotten his notice (but no parts avail yet :)) but I've yet to receive one and all they say at the Help line is " noooo nothing for you little man........"

I don't think any of the 09-10 Vibes are on the list. We haven't received any notices (yet) and our Vibes are 9 months apart based on when they were manufactured. I still get the other recall notices all the time BUT nothing about airbags.

2009-2010 VIbes do not have the air bags with exploding inflators, which was the recall that was performed on ours. It is only for 2003-2005 models where the inflator is to be replaced.

The 2009-2010 do have a recall for the spiral cable for the driver's air bag being damaged. But that is the only air bag related recall I see on NHTSA's site for the 2nd gens.

I realize what the recall is for, but Pontiac's "Help" line will not give out the inclusive Vins so you really know if your bag will inflate or not...remember, this is for a part whose contact for the air bag was changed but not the part # itself, thereby unless you know the Vins the change was made on, you (GM) would seem to be legally at risk while the driver of course will be at, shall we say, slightly more risk? To say I've lost a bit of faith in their solving the problem is on the money

Why be surprised? Pontiac and the Vibe are gone. GM has moved on to focus on the remaining brands. They'll slowly start phasing out help for the Vibe (and other Pontiacs as well).

GM kind of does this for all their cars. For example, the ignition switches...updated parts have the same number, although they'd rather give you a plastic insert for your ignition key to "fix" it than actually change out the problem part.
