Hissing sound from front passenger side?

Post by ken99287 »

I have an 03 GT that's making a hissing sound from the passenger side. I've narrowed it down to coming between the very corner of the windshield to the airbag on the dash.

It's barely audible at idle and gets louder with engine speed. At first, I thought it was wind noise because the fender liner was missing on that side, but I have now determined that it is only engine speed related. No relation to whether the car is moving or in gear or not or if the climate control is on or not.

The sound is not coming from the vents and with the area with glove box out. It can also be heard in the same area in the engine bay, the rear most passenger side of the engine bay. Is there any Vac lines in this area that can be hissing? Could be a pulley?

I guess I can run the car without the belt for a few seconds to test the pulley theory...

Anyone else experience this?

Sounds similar to this, but the story has no ending. The OP never finished the thread with an update!

The '09 in the other thread does not have a power steering pump but uses electric steering assist like most the newer vehicles use. Have you tried running the engine with the belt removed? Is the noise still there? By removing the belt from the front of the engine, you take the water pump, power steering pump, belt tensioner, idler pulley, AC compressor, and the belt itself out of the equation as to where the noise is coming from. If the noise is still there then it is coming from some other source. This is an easy place to start because you just remove the drive belt. The added thing by doing this is the engine bay will be a little quieter so if the noise is still there you may get a better idea as to it location.

A word of warning about running engine without drive belt on front of engine- Do not run engine for more then 1 minute as you may damage the engine. With the drive belt removed, you have no water pump to circulate coolant through the engine. Do this with a cold engine as this will give you more time to check the noise out. If you can not check everything the way you want to, shut the engine off and let it cool down for a few hours before you start it up to try again.

I'm going to work on replacing the leaky front donut tomorrow. Maybe that's what it is? Also going to install the new parking brake cables, backing plate, wheel bearing, and shoes. My car almost rolled away the other day with the car in gear. Not enough compression to stop it from rolling!

If I get done early enough and feel like it, I'll pop the belt off.

Thanks for the advice!
