Screeching sound when steering wheel all the way over

Post by davedyer »

Getting a high pitched sound from the front tires it seems. Almost like they are rubbing. Running stock 205-55/16
Only when driving slow and steering wheel fully cocked in either direction.

A lot of vehicles will get a rather unpleasant squeal when putting the wheel hard over against the stop, usually from a slipping drive belt (belt slipping on the power steering pulley) Does it also make the sound if you are not moving, perhaps in park, and you turn the steering wheel over until it stops and keep trying to turn it more? Does it do it when turning both directions or only one?

If not, you could check for rubbing by turning the wheel until it screeches, then hold the steering wheel there, stop, put it in park (or neutral and set the parking brake if a manual), turn the engine off, and then look to see if the wheel is close to contacting anything in the wheel well.

Does it do it on different kinds of road surfaces? I know sometimes I get a screech on slow turns in one particular parking lot, but not others

ps, great pic in you signature, but it's too huge. so might be good to resize or crop it to get it closer to size listed in viewtopic.php?t=19792" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks for the input. I'll try a few of your suggestions. Is my picture a more acceptable size now?
