is it possible to install a 2DIN head unit in a 2008 Vibe?

Post by meall »

A few years ago I change the standard HU for a new one, but it is now failing and I hate it do death anyway.

At the time, the guy told me that a 2 DIN HU would not fit in the 2008 Vibe. He stated that it is considered as a 1.5 DIN, not 2. But in all my research, I never saw that it was impossible to install a 2 din.

I want to change again, but with something that is more user friendly, possibly with touch and graphical interfaces that speak to me, instead of having me concentrate on buttons while I'm driving. And I want a good hand free HU for when the phone rings, and a better iPhone control that the Kenwood I ended up buying 2-3 years ago.

Thanks.

Whoever you talked to does not know about Vibes. They all can take a 2 DIN unit. Here is a nice JVC unit in my son's 06:

It was easy to install with an adapter kit. I only used the textured faceplate insert, and reused the metal mounting brackets from the stock radio since the kit came with plastic brackets and I felt they would break easier. I did have to massage the metal brackets and drill a few new holes to match the holes on the sides of the new radio. The antenna adapter and wiring harness made it easy, but you should already have both of them from your current unit.

This unit has bluetooth, external microphone, remote control, remote USB port (with 24" cord - mounted in glove box, removable faceplate, DVD, etc all for about $400.

Good luck on it!

Hello,

I had, finally, an App Radio 2 installed in my Vibe. Working just fine for the last six month. I had it profesionnaly installed, costed almost as much as the head unit for installation... :o

Now, I'm ready to get a backup camera for the Vibe and this head unit. Is there any recommendation on a model that will work fine with the Vibe and installation instruction on how to wire the cables from the back to the front of the car? considering that the camera have to be installed on the back door, it is a bit difficult for me to see how to get the wire out of the door into the car front.

Also, most camera manufacturer will state in the manual to take the 12V onto the reverse wire. But this will work only is reverse mode. What would be the best way to have the camera always getting a 12V source if required?

I saw some models that fits on the license plate and some models such as this one:

Who require a hole to be done in the car metal. Any suggestion will be welcome. I really need this for when I attach the trailer or try to park in a full parking lot!!!

That camera looks like the one on my wife's Equinox. It is located just to the left of the hatch release button, so I bet you could install it on the plastic "Pontiac" piece that houses the hatch release and the license plate lights. There looks to be enough room to drill the right size hole in the plastic next to the lights, and route the wiring through the hatch along with the rest of the lighting wires. You might have to extend the power wire to reach the back up lights, but hopefully the video cable would be long enough. You should be able to get an extension for it if necessary.

I've been thinking about adding one to my son's radio, but just haven't really looked into it. I did look at the license plate mount ones briefly, but they just looked too cheap. The one you found looks really nice. I might look at some cars at a salvage yard and see what hook ups they use. Maybe I can make one of them work for a lot less money!

Good luck on it!

Probably. I looked at it this evening, and I thing it is very doable.

Do you think I could be able to power it from a permanent (always on) 12v in the back of the car so the camera will be available anytime even if not in reverse mode?

Also, how do I get to the rear part of the Vibe back door? There is a plastic there, but could not find how to get inside it...

II had ordered one license plate camera on amazon.ca, then cancelled when I found a reference to this model on a forum. At first it looks daunting to dig hole in the car, but that must be the easy part, considering the wiring part as more difficult to accomplish. And it is certainly prettier this way. My main problem is to find it in canada at a decent price. May have to use a USA eBay vendor.
