Tachometer Dying?

Post by c2cummin »

Just wondering if anyone else out there is having an issue with their tachometer and temperature gauge. I've noticed in the last while that the tach will sometimes bounce around or just die and zero out. When it drops to zero the temperature gauge also drops to zero. It never stays this way for very long and doesn't happen every time I drive. It seems to be worse in the winter months but still happens occasionally during the summer.

It only concerns because when they both drop to zero the engine cooling fan will also switch off if it's running.

The ECM has already been replaced due to the recall.

Is anyone else having this problem and if so what was the cause?

The car is a 2007 Vibe.

Thanks!

looks like the signals that drive the tach and temp gauge come from the ECM. The ECM also controls the engine fan. While it might be some odd intermittent issue in a faulty ECM, it could be a loose connector somewhere. The ECM is behind/below the glove box, might be worth making sure that all the connectors are in all the way.

Did the problem exist before the ECM was replaced, and if it only happened after, how much time passed between the ECM replacement and the problem starting? Was there anything that coincided with the start of the problem?

Are there any actual engine performance issues when the gauges go flaky?

Thanks for the reply and sorry for my delayed response.

I bought the car used and it had already had the ECM replaced so I don't know if the issue existed before hand. The issue had started tho shortly before a full year of me owning the car. It was very intermittent at first though, it rarely happened.

There are no engine performance issues when this is happening as well. Car keeps running just fine.

I called a Toyota dealer and they were more than positive that it's a faulty instrument cluster and there shouldn't be any problem with the ECM.

I picked up a cluster and ECM from a wreckers and I'm going to try replacing just the cluster first and see if it solves my issue.

I also noticed that if I have my A/C running when this problem happens it shuts off. Just keeps getting weirder. Lol
