I did see on here at one point in the past that some people were inquiring about programming transponder keys (Toyota Smart Key). I know that many of the U.S. models do not have the smart key, but I know that GT's do and some of the higher end models. I cannot attest to whether or not this works on Canadian models, but would be willing to bet it does. Anyway, I only had the one key that operated my car and another that had operated it at one point, but had been programmed out of the system when it had been lost, subsequently it had been found, and it was going to cost nearly $150.00 just to have it programmed. Being someone who refuses to have anyone else do any form of repair to my cars (simply because of the cost and the piece of mind of knowing the repair was actually done correctly). I decided to look deeper into this because I refused to believe that there was not a way that a do-it-yourselfer would have to program the key. I was able to find a "Toyota Smart Keymaker" for $15.00, including shipping on eBay (Amazon also carries for about the same price). A few simple steps and I had programmed the old key to again start and run the engine. I saved about $135.00 and am also now able to program more keys. My suggestion for anyone looking for a key, or thinking about making spares in case they lose those the keys that they have, should only go this route and avoid the dealer altogether. Un-cut transponder keys can also be easily found on eBay for a very reasonable price.file:///D:/Users/Quinn/Desktop/Toy_Key.jpg
Yep.. you did the right thing. When we purchased a spare key 4 years ago, $50 -$60 was the best price for an FOB uncut key. The supplier provided the instructions with invoice on how to program the new key. It worked GREAT!
