Seeing as it was run very low on oil there is probably other internal damage. Unless you have a friend who is a mechanic and owns a garage it will be expensive for parts and deadly for labor. A low mileage used engine is the way to go.sciko67 wrote:I looked up spun rod bearing on YouTube and that is exactly what my car sounds like. How momentous of a project would it be to rebuild the engine?
My 03 base had bad rod bearings and was giving me a knock. I replaced them with a generic bearing set from autozone. Can do it from under the car if you are careful. No pan gasket, just sealant. Cost was about $50 plus an oil change. Car was still running fine when I traded it in on a different 03 about 100K miles later, so I think I'll have to disagree that a worn bearing means the engine is terminal. Might be other damage, but not a sure thing.Raven wrote: It's beginning to sound (no pun intended) like a rod bearing is gone. Quite terminal for an engine. You're likely looking at a rebuild or used replacement engine.
Just wondering, have you done this kinda thing before? If so, I bet you've got it. These cars are cakewalk easy to work on most of the time.sciko67 wrote:Does anyone have advice or insight for me?

Now that the engine is blown, my options are, fix it cheap and sell it, or fix it right and keep it. As low and silvery as the oil was, I feel this engine is a bag of worms. Not worth the time even if I could fix it. No other decent car is in our price range, and everything else on this car is in great shape, so I think I am confident enough to spend $2000 on a good, low mileage engine, and push it for another 200K miles. Monkey Wrench Racing has one right in that price range. 25-60k miles on it. 2005+ piston design. I believe I could install it myself. Does anyone have advice or insight for me?
Unfortunately I let the oil get way too low. I had an overconfidence in the car and let life distract me. Not s mistake I'll make again.Nasmfell wrote:Car could not have been in that great of a shape if your engine blew in just under 1 year.
At that mileage, it may have begun to burn oil fast enough to get too low before he realized it was happening. I did read that someone's oil consumption got really bad after 100k miles.Nasmfell wrote:Car could not have been in that great of a shape if your engine blew in just under 1 year.
