Tweeters: what hardware is needed?

Post by lannvouivre »

I bought some used factory tweeters via Bad Vibe for a fantastic price. However, I don't have the factory amp setup. I don't know anything about sound systems, so:
Do I need an amp, or is a crossover enough?
If I need an amp, what kind do I need to run the 4 door speakers plus the two tweeters?
What if I want to add a subwoofer later?

The car is a 2006 base.

A crossover would be the simplest option. You would have to double check, but the door speakers are 2 ohm as are the tweeters, you could tap the front door speakers inline and a simple high pass filter to protect the tweeters. Like these:

or
http://www.parts-express.com/5-khz-high ... r--266-472" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The first option will work better for your application, plugs inline, compact, and already in self enclosed case. The 2 Ohms come into play, determining the actual crossover frequency. The first one lists 2.8k for 4 ohms, the Toyota OEM speakers in the Vibe are around 2.4 (will call 2 for simplicity) which would make the crossover around 5.6K for the OEM speakers.

Adding a sub or other components later would require adding an amp and additional wiring. In many cases, most of the wiring is already in the car, just add your device at the end.

Thanks, Derf. I'm planning on using the crossover in my setup since I already bought it months ago. it's the Lanzar Vibe X2 high pass one, and I think it's active since it has a terminal for +12v. I can't find any info on how to wire it up without an amp. I do have some pioneer aftermarket speakers (http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-TS-A1675R ... 00A0LZHYS/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I think, not sure of the Ohms...would have to look it up). It looks like 3-way means they already have tweeters built in, but the crossover could kind of control the volume of the other tweeters separately? I definitely don't know enough about audio to know if this redundancy would be bad or stupid etc.

Speaking of wiring, there are no harnesses for the tweeters built in. I can do the actual wiring no problem, just need to know where the wires need to go and what, if anything, needs to go between A and B.

The crossover has 2 (left and right) input jacks, and 4 (2 left, 2 right) output. There's also a terminal labeled "rem," which I absolutely don't understand.

The Lanzar Vibe X2 is an active crossover, to place inline before an amplifier. It would be used to tune the line level audio before amplification, not for tuning speaker level audio. The port labeled rem - remote trigger power, used to tell the crossover to turn on and off, to prevent it draining your car battery when not being used. The Pioneer speakers are 4 Ohm and have a built in crossover. The crossover would not control the volume of the tweeters, your equalizer or bass/treble settings would control the level of highs coming out of the tweeter.
