Burning smell after pad & rotor change

Post by cptnsolo77 »

As the topic says. Took a drive out to set the pads...drove around the community making gentle braking & stops over speed bumps. After that I dove & did some heavy braking. I noticed a burning smell afterwards though. I have never changed the pads & rotors at the same time so is the smell normal until they break in ? I did get a tiny bit of caliper lube on one of the rotors during install so im guessing that may be the odor & burning off. If that is the case how long will the smell last ? Everything was clean & used lube on all required areas. Now Im not very confident after my install now... :(

You did remove the "shipping grease" from the new rotors with solvent, didn't you?
Even if you didn't, all the volatiles should burn off in a day or so.
Some high performance brake manufactures recommend a quick series of hard "near" stops to heat the new pads in order to temper the pad adhesives and keep them from adhering to the rotor.
The guaranteed way to ruin a new brake job is doing an initial panic stop from 60ish to a Full Stop with new brake pads!

New pads will give off a burning clutch kind of smell when they are heated up. Not to worry.

jJst got done replace my turned rotors and pads. I cleaned the rotors with some brake cleaner and didn't have any issues. If you didn't it'll stop smelling after a day or 2.

Yup ! Rotors, calipers, caliper bracket & caliper slides were all cleaned with brake cleaner. All the old brake lube was wiped off as well. After i reassembled everything I gave the rotors a good shot of brake cleaner before I put the wheels on. Thx guys :D
