The Non-blizzard of '14

Central Indiana got up to 14-inches of heavy wet snow, closely followed by 30 mile-per-hour winds, -14-degree actual temperatures, -40 wind chills and … NO BLIZZARD WARNINGS! :o

It seems like more people would heed the (dire) warnings about conditions, staying off the roads, and staying home, if TV stations would simply go dark with a 'YES, IT ACTUALLY IS HORRIBLE OUTSIDE! STAY HOME FOOL' message printed on the screen.

Instead, local stations go 24x7 with alleged "BREAKING NEWS" coverage showing live shots from inside news trucks cruising on plowed empty roads, reporters standing outside gabbing with in-studio newsreaders for 6-minute live shots (when, allegedly, your skin will freeze in 5 minutes or less), and 'News Conferences' where government officials (who all managed to get to the studio or office just fine) PLEAD with people to stay home.

Oh yeah, the malls are opening today at 2 pm.

Everything you said about the news is exactly how it was here in Chicagoland this morning too !

It is currently -14.4* with a wind chill of -37* here in Sandwich (60 miles west of Chicago).

Both our Vibes are snuggled up in the garage where it's about 50* thanks to the furnace. My dad called into work because of the blowing and drifting snow and cold. I got a call at 6:30 this morning telling me not to come into work because the roads going to work (I work in the middle of nowhere) were down to one lane and the three people that made it in were stuck in the driveway because it was so badly drifted and they couldn't get the John Deere to fire up to clear the driveway or parking lot. There was also no heat in the office. Snow day for me :D!

Meanwhile, here in the southern US we get temperatures in the singles digits, its currently 8* with windchill at -7*, and schools closed because of the "frigid temps" with no snow and no ice. Business are open of course. I can say this is a first for me seeing this closing of schools because its TOO cold.

All I can say is I'm glad I'm not still in Chicago with those temps. My southern blood can't handle that.

It was 76 today, 79 yesterday, but will get colder in a few days. Suppose to be 66 on Thursday. I don't know what I'll do if it ever gets that cold here. Stay warm y'all :D

Bad weather for car batteries. If you are giving or getting a jump start, make sure whoever is doing it hooks up + to +, - to - correctly

As usual, we missed out on the snow by 50 miles or so. -4F was the lowest I saw it and windchills in the -30 range. The roads were perfectly fine but all of the schools in the area closed down anyway. All of the electronic message signs in the area said to avoid central and northern Indiana.

I let the Sonic deal with abuse from the coldest temps while the Vibe remained parked. :D

40's this weekend, time to wash the cars and maybe squeeze in an oil change on the Vibe.
