Inside the box for the air cleaner is a white plastic "cup". What is this peice for and is it necessary? Down the road I plan on getting an Injen CAI anyway, but for now I would just like to know.

I'm not familiar with the 04 airbox (you do have an 04 right) but I suspect it's the MAF - mass air flow sensor...Take a picture if you can for us...If it is the MAF, you will need that for the CAI installation...it doesn't get removed (we're not sure how the 04 airbox having the MAF built into it will work when isntalling a CAI)
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
I had my airbox apart yesterday for removal. The mass airflow sensor is black and held in from the top by two gold coloured screws. In my '03 there are some white plastic parts inside the airbox, but i didn't really pay much attention to them as I was ripping the airbox out to install a cold air intake.I'll look at the spare parts box in my garage tomorrow and try to see what it's for.Cheers
Gotcha. Went and broke out my old intake parts. I assume you mean this: That is where the air exits the airbox and heads through the hose into the throttle body after being filtered. The air starts at the intake hose which is directly behind the driver side headlight. Goes into that hose, down, under the headlight, and around the battery, into the bottom of the airbox. Goes up, through the filter, out that white "cup", out of the airbox, into the hose, into the throttle neck, and into the engine.

Yes I do have an 04 and the last pic was what I was talking about. Would it hurt or help if it is removed? Does anyone know? I do plan on getting a CAI but I know I will more than likely have to replace the box when I get my Supercharger anyway. Just idle chit-chat I guess.

Whatever, if I new everything about this site I would have found it. As you can see I just started using this site. I thought just maybe I could get a little info here.

Just for the record, that part is an air bell or stack, and it has a radiused inlet to improve the airflow and guide it smoothly into the duct. it also has a honeycomb grid of thin plastic dividers to straighten out the flow and reduce turbulence, so that the MAF sensor gets a clean signal (since it only samples a portion of the airflow). Unfortunately, the grid causes quite a bit of restriction (I took some measurments, but can't lay my hands on them at the moment), enough that the system flows better with the whole piece removed. When I did this, the correction factors shown on a Tech II tool changed, suggesting that the grid did have some effect, but it also showed more flow (if I can trust the readings). I've been running without the part for months with no problems, and I'm thinking of carving out the grid and putting it back on, since such a bell normally adds about 5% flow vs. a sharp edged pipe, but I'd like to be sure it won't cause problems. (I have a feeling a new one would come only with the whole box, likely for more than the price of a CAI!)

On the GT there's a white ring with a center vane that accomplishes the same thing. Fortunately it's not as restrictive but I removed it for kicks and the throttle responce below 3k was bad. 5 min. experiment and back to stock. Might just be the 2zz as CAIs often cause the same on this motor. But if you pull yours, stomp on the gas at 2k rpm and see if it lags.
