Tire Decisions are hard.

Post by SeattleJeremy »

Buying tires is difficult. Each purchase is a commitment for around 50,000 miles and there's no way to test them before purchasing.
I feel like I'm always searching for a better tire, because I've never purchased a set of tires that I was totally happy with.
The best tire was the Michelin Pilot Sport's installed on the WRX, they where very expensive ($180 a tire), but always had grip and could be pushed much further before vs the RE92's.

The Pilot Sport A/S's have been discontinued, and are replaced in the lineup with the Pilot Sport AS3, which are closer to my target price, but still a on the high side. Also, being new in my eyes are unproven.

My personal tire history since 2004
Bridgestone Potenza RE92 - stock WRX
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S - WRX - Amazing, expensive.
Goodyear Eagle RS-A - stock Vibe
Yokohama ADVAN S.4 - Vibe - better grip in the wet then the RS-A, but not good enough to buy another set
Continental ExtremeContact DWS - Vibe - better overall grip, but very squishy sidewall
Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position - Vibe - installed today

If the reviews are anything to go by the RE970AS's installed today should have as much grip as the DSW's they replace, but the sidewall properties of the ADVAN S.4's. Here's hoping :)

Hopefully, next summer I'll be able to afford some race wheels and tires for doing Autocross.

If I really wanted to I'd become a tire enthusiast. However, that would be very expensive, so what I have will work for me for now... Nexen N5000, bought used from Ebay. Awesome in the wet, decent touring, squishy sidewall. I figure that I will keep the touring-type tire for daily uses while buying another set for more fun uses.

Hankook Ventus V4. You will have a very very hard time getting these tires to hydroplane!

I've always wanted to try out the DWS's but always ended up with something else.

On my vibe I swapped out the stock tires for some cheap hankook tires which gave me a quiet smoother ride (for a short period of time) but handling was horrible. I did some research and wanted to try the DWS but somehow ended up going with yokohama yk520's. After the 520s wore out I went to the yk580's. Both are nice tires but they don't last too long, only got around 30,000 miles out of the 520's and had about 1/2 tread life left on the 580's before I traded the car.

I just recently got rid of the stock tires on my mazda 3 (at 1,400'ish miles) and was going to get the DWS. The tire shop told me I shouldn't get the DWS for my car because of the soft sidewalls they won't handle as great and will easily get a bubble on the sidewall when you hit a bad pothole. I ended up getting Michelin Primacy MXM4 and so far they seem to be the best tires I've had so far. Ride was still a bit stiff and noisy when I first got them on but after a few days of driving they got very quiet and a lot softer giving a very comfortable ride but still stick like glue when turning. I think I'll stick with Michelin from now on, but they're so pricey =/

If you enjoy going around corners and having steering feel, the DSW is not the tire to buy. I'm glad to be rid of them.
