Virus?

Post by fuel4soul »

For some reason I think my PC has a virus, I don't know though because I've never had one that I know of. I have Windows XP and my computer is a dell. I can't leave it on for long or it shuts itself of because it says security reasons. My homepage sets something new everyday and wont stay and Yahoo.com like I put it. I also get a bunch of Error pop-ups, that send the error reports.

Update your virus-scan software if you have it on your PC and do a complete system scan.If you don't, you can run some free online virus-scan utilities here:http://housecall.trendmicro.com/houseca ... c.comCheck them out as well.. wouldn't hurt to run them in addition.

Also run some spyware software such as Lavasoft Ad-Aware.Could have some spyware or adware on your PC that changes your homepage. I had the exact same problem, ran ad-aware, it found stuff, removed it, and my problem is gone!

We had it at work... on the XP machines, you'd get this window that would tell you the computer had to be shut down, even if you told it no, it would shut down anyway. On the 2000 machines, it would just choke and hang, no windows or nothing. I spent 5 hours cleaning that sucker out of 11 different PCs.

If you got the Blaster worm, go in Your Computer, run a search on blaster and rename the file, Eg.: Balster1. Do not try to erase it, it won't work. Changing the name will disable it until you get the patch to restore you PC.BTW, I'm running Win 95 at home and I haven't had any trouble. Sometimes it helps to do not be up to date. lol

A friend of mine had one a couple of years ago ... when she tried to go to norton.com or symantec.com it would shut her computer down, so you couldn't even update. You might need to call in a professional ... sorry

If you haven't used the Windows Update feature lately (past month or so) I would suggest doing this first. If you don't have a Windows Update icon/link go here: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp Click on Scan for Updates then select all the Critical Updates it finds for your PC. If you haven't run any updates or patches in a while there may be quite a few. If your PC keeps rebooting because of the virus, keep going back to that site until you get all the Critical Updates completed. For the future make sure youInstall AntiVirus Software (will disable viruses from websites,email,diskettes...)Install a personal Firewall (will prevent people from accessing your PC from the web)Check for Critical Updates every couple months (will keep your Windows OS, Browser, and Email updated with latest security patches)Run AdAware once a week (will remove adware, spyware, and bad cookies)good luck!
