Dry rot?

Post by Mick-F »

My 09
GT has some cracking on the inside of the tires, almost 59k on them. Time for new tires. I have winter tires and wheels so I can take my time anc check out what is available and prices.
Has any one compiled a list of available tires, by price to fit my GT? 215/45 18 size on there now, I think they are the original. I got the car with 28k on it.
I have been looking thru this section of the site and have found different suggestions.
Thanks, Mick

Tire Rack is a great place to research, and buy, tires.

Check out their Survey Results too:

Hankook Ventus V4or V12. Very good tires that are almost impossible to hydroplane in the rain with!

Good opportunity to discuss why dry rot happens and how to keep the new tires from dry rotting before the tread wears out.

There are chemicals in tires called anti-ozonants that work as a preservative. The chemicals are intended to seep out of the rubber as the tire rolls, this is the brown "bloom" you see on untreated sidewalls. If the tire is old or doesn't move very often, there isn't enough anti-ozonant to prevent damage, thus the tire dry rots.

There are products that will restore the anti-ozonants to older tires, but they can't fix cracks. I've had good results applying Meguiar's Hot Shine Tire Foam to brand new tires, as it has anti-ozonants and helps protect the rubber. Reapply every three months and you're good to go. If you have not-so-new untreated tires, wash them and apply a tire protectant before the cracking starts.

When I bought my 10 GT I replaced the mismatched (3 different!) tires with some 235/40-18s that are a bit wider than the stock size. I really liked how they looked plus they gave me a bit more cushion against curbs. But I had to replace two of them since my daughter drove on a flat tire (4lbs of air) for about 20 miles and I did not think it would be safe for her. All I could get that wasn't $200+ each was some 205/45-18s Hankook Ventus tires and I agree they are good tires too.

Both our 2009 Vibe GTs will be getting 215/45/18 Hankook Ventus V12 tires installed early next year (around income tax refund time). My tire guy quoted me $640.00 mounted and balanced for 4 tires which is comparable to Tire Rack's prices. My tire guy sells Hankook tires like crazy and says they make really good tires. My dad just got some cheapy Hankook all season tires put on his s10 a couple months back and he has been very happy with them. Says they have great wet traction, etc.

Tire rack has some great prices, unfortunately there are none near me.
Are the Hancook tires any quieter than the stock? Quieter would be better.

Not a GT but put Continental Extreme Contact DWS on the vibe last summer and I love them.

Well you buy online via Tire Rack then go to a local tire shop or mechanic to get them mounted. They even have package deals with some local installers.

From my experience of owning many sets of Michelin, nothing, but nothing will prevent side wall dry rot. Michelins are just born that way. Unfortunately I have not found a better tire than the MXV4s I am currently running on my Vibe. Great tire, until the tread wears down; now they are only average at best. Regarding the Hankooks, I have had several pair on my Hyundai Elantra Touring. I would not call Hankooks excellent tires. They have one and only one very good tire; that being the H727. It is a bit too light on steering, but an adequate tire for the price nonetheless. Hankooks are nowhere near as quiet as Michelins, although no tire is. My car also came with H426s from the factory which were frightening in light snow. I think the reviews by customers on Tire Rack are pretty dead on. As such, you won't find any Hankooks at/near the top. Again, the H727 is worth a try.
I am now torn between trying the new Pirelli tires and the new Ecsta PA31s from Kumho. If I decide to stick with Costco tires, it will be the Michelin Defenders or the Bridgestone Serenity Plus. Costco won't give me any prorating on the MXV4s even though they have the side wall cracks. I'll try to get a few more miles out of them. I'm leaning towards the Bridgestone Serenity Plus for my next shoes only because I like the Uni-T technology where the tire keeps its grip even as the tread gets low. My MXV4s have gone from the greatest tire ever, to very average as the tread gets low.
