Super Glue, Rubbing Alcohol, & Acetone mess...

Post by 03VIBEswfl »

Hey all-

So I was trying to glue the jiggly plastic part over the driver side keyhole (and later put on some semi-cheesy "chrome" door handle covers, which at least make the 4 handles on the car look uniform...)

Anyway, I had some serious leakage of the super glue down the side of the door ( ), and then (I think) I tried to clean it up with a microfiber cloth and some intense 99% rubbing alcohol; and then (I know for sure) I also used the microfiber cloth with some acetone/nail polish remover.... And the result is the mess you see in the photos. My brother-in-law works in auto body and although he hasn't seen the car yet, says that he has some kind of solvent he can use on it.

What do you all think? Anyone ever done something as boneheaded as this? Based on the description and the ingredients used (lol), did I really screw up the paint? Or is this something more 'topical' that could be removed by a solvent?

Hard to say for sure, but I would guess you have simply moved the super glue around with the rubbing alcohol and further spread the glue with the acetone. Although the nail polish remover could have affected the cars finish, it does not appear to in the picture. You may be able to buff off the super glue with some rubbing compound, but I would get more opinions. Acetone would remove the super glue (unless the glue was a blended version), you would have to work in small areas and could take several passes to remove all the glue.

Thanks for the tip. Come to think of it, that is sort of what it looks like. Well, to the brother-in-law...

If your car has been waxed over the years,...perhap what you are seeing is the wax lifted off the paint finish...

I would think that if it was paint, then it would of bubbled up or blistered up off the metal.

Try Bug and tar remover....it is basiclly mineral spirits.....or a car wax stripper.

Oh, this thing has been waxed more than a beehive... that did briefly cross my mind. Hmm, I got some of that bug/tar remover. I'll try it on a small spot. Thanks!
