This past week, my air bag light went on. I brought it to a dealer and he told me that the coil in the steering column got shorted out and that caused the airbag to short out too...
From what I was given from the estimate, the coil would cost $347.72 for them to order it and then a total of $460.06 with the labor added on.
For the Air Bag, it would cost $750.00 and then with the labor added on, it would be $860.34.
The grand total would be: $1,320.40
I am wondering where everyone would suggest to order the parts from a reputable place online or somewhere in the Des Moines, IA area. I have tried looking online, but I don't know what site are good for this sort of thing...
The part numbers for the pieces I need are:
Coil: GM19184829
Airbag: GM19184555
I would appreciate any input.

what specific air bag code are you getting?
it sounds to me that they don't know exactly what is wrong with the air bag system and would rather throw a 'range' of parts in hopes of fixing it; like the clock spring ALONG WITH the drivers air bag module.
the likelihood of the clock spring failing: possible, i've seen this happen.
the likelihood of the air bag module failing: i've never seen this happen.
in my experience, i've never seen an actual air bag fail, only the components wired directly to them; ie the clock spring that controls the air bag.
plus if the air bag truly was shorted, it would have ignited and blown up in your face. most likely that your clock spring has an open circuit and that is what's throwing the code.
also based on the estimate they gave you it looks like they are attempting to double dip into your wallet. it looks like they are charging 1.0 hours to replace the spring, and then another 1.0 hours to replace the air bag module. well, guess what? the clock spring is located directly behind the drivers air bag. the air bag needs to be removed before the clock spring can be replaced, meaning that they are charging you an extra hour to replace the air bag when it's already been removed.

I have the same issue. 2009 vibe with intermittent air bag light that responds to steering wheel position consistently.I'm looking to replace the clock spring also and would welcome suggestions on sources including used. Thanks
