anyone else's gas cap tether coming off?

Post by canadave »

That's right--the gas cap's plastic leash :) Every time I screw the gas cap back in, the damned thing keeps popping off the cap. I wind up screwing the cap back in place, then pressing the plastic leash back into place all the way around.

I'm reallllly hoping this is a cheap part to replace and a simple fix to put a new one on/in! It's a small thing, but it's driving me nuts

hehe...wouldn't want to send it my way, would you? ;) I need it more than you....(j/k)

On a more serious note, I wonder whether a replacement would be any better than the original? How would a replacement fix the problem? I mean, the leash I have DOES snap on to the gas cap like it should, after it comes off. Would a replacement simply be a much tighter fit?

But then again, if it can get snapped on, doesn't that imply it can just as easily get snapped off? :0

That leash is a pain however I found that you may try changing the way you put it back on. The round piece that connects to the cap is conical. Put the larger end over the cap first then force it on. After I did that it hasn't been an issue.

Oh, okay, so it's sort of egg-shaped, and the larger side goes on the top side of the cap? Interesting. I'll give that a shot, thanks.

Put the larger side on the cap first then you'll need to "snap" the smaller side down into the grove. Does the make sense?

I think so. In fact, I'm afraid I've already done it before, and it just keeps coming off. But I'll have another look at it (once this darned rain lets up!)
