Oil Filter every other oil change?

Post by Mark »

I have a 2012 Honda CR-V and noticed that Honda specifies oil filter changes every other oil change. I'm using NAPA Platinum filters and Mobil-1 on both the CR-V and the Vibe, and now am wondering if I can go with the same intervals on the Vibe as well.

I know filters, even the $7 ones I'm using, are cheap, but it would cut down on waste oil going to the landfill, which is good. And if the filter can handle the 10-15k FCI, then why not? I've read some of the discussions on bitog, which have me leaning more towards the FCI e/o OCI routine.

Any opinions on GV?

On my Matrix I change the oil filter every 5K and the oil at 10K miles using mobil 1. I don't understand the logic of changing the filter every other oil change. Unless it's a HUGE filter and cost $$.

When I was young, and believe me that was a long time ago, filters were replaced at every other oil change. IMO not a good idea today. That said, most say that you can go longer than 3,000 miles between LOF. That is probably the better environmental choice.

My 14 horsepower lawn mower has a larger oil filter than my Gen 1 Vibe! So I never go over 4,500 miles on the filter. I also only use the GT filter, which is larger than the base filter.

I use Wally World full synthetic and AcDelco filter. Replace both around 5000. A few oil changes ago my oil test at Blackstone was great. They recommended I could go 7-10K. I'm currently running to 7K.

I don't understand the oil filter skip suggestion. It must be used for "cost of ownership" purposes by the marketing department.

Highly recommend a Blackstone test. Better to know than guess.

So, about the exact opposite of what I'm thinking of doing. Oil change every 5-7.5k and filter every other, so 10-15k. Honda has been recommending this for years now on their engines, and it seems to have a good deal of support on BITOG. Makes sense to me, unless your engine is really gunked up already, the filter just doesn't have that much work to do.

Have you ever done an OA? Or cut open one of those 5k filters and see if they are filtering much?

From the OP: "if the filter can handle the 10-15k FCI". So yes, I'm aware that that you can go over 3,000 miles, thank you.

So with Mobil-1 and the NAPA Platinum filter I guess I feel pretty good with the 7.5-10K OCI.

According to Honda it's more of an environmental issue. Used oil can be recycled, but used filters still hold a lot of oil that then makes it into landfills, and then eventually the groundwater. Cutting the number of filters in half would make a pretty substantial impact, especially if a majority of 3k/3mo DIYers adopted this approach. And since Honda has been building, selling and testing engines for a long time, I'm going to guess that they're not suggesting this so that more engines get sludged up and fail. In the long run, that's not going to sell more cars/engines.
Highly recommend a Blackstone test. Better to know than guess.
I agree and probably will, but I'm going to bet that they tell me that I can go a lot longer.

Maybe the oil filters on the 09-10 models that use the inserts are more environmentally sound.

I've read that some manufacturers don't have a specific mileage change interval. It only refers to the "oil life monitor".
Actually, using the OLM has a lot of scientific basis behind it.
There are some things that I give no thought to and some things worry me to death. As in life, some decisions are made by the brain and some are made by the wallet.
My wallet can afford the 7K interval.
My brain feels better at the 7K interval.
Now onto something else to worry about.........

Dirty filters do a better job than fresh ones they say... 8-) If the manufacturer specifies it can be ran twice, I wouldn't have a problem with their recommendations. Unless it was a cheap filter like an orange can of death.

GM is touting that as an environmental benefit with their canister style filters. A smaller item to dispose of, and no metal can. But it's interesting how things always come back around, this "new fangled" style filter was the same one they were using prior to spin-on's.

Yep. That's what I noticed in the case of my Sonic. There really isn't any set OCI in the manual, GM only states at 7500 miles "Check engine oil level and oil life percentage. Change engine oil and filter, if needed." Curiously, my OLM seems to decrease 1% in approximately 75 miles. Others have their lasting much longer, looks like my style of driving will have me doing ~7500 mile OCI's on mine though.

Honda builds and sells more gasoline engines than probably any other manufacturer, and from what I understand have been recommending this for years now. The Maintenance Minder in my CR-V has two "main item" codes: A & B. A says to replace the engine oil, B says replace engine oil and oil filter. The minder comes up when oil life gets down to 15% remaining, but there is also a note to replace the oil once every 12 months regardless.

I don't see why this approach wouldn't be just as valid on my two Vibes as well.

This every other filter change is kinda like reusing the coffee grounds and filter a second time. You will still get blackish output but the quality maybe not be the same as the first cycle.

I bought a 10 pack of Toyota filters for the 2.4l Vibes. This drooped the cost down to $3 per filter! For that price I'm changing the filter EVERY time I change the oil. For my family it is around the 7500 mile interval and I'm using Mobil 1. Just my 2 cents worth :D
