So, about the exact opposite of what I'm thinking of doing. Oil change every 5-7.5k and filter every other, so 10-15k. Honda has been recommending this for years now on their engines, and it seems to have a good deal of support on BITOG. Makes sense to me, unless your engine is really gunked up already, the filter just doesn't have that much work to do.Salsa Guy wrote:On my Matrix I change the oil filter every 5K and the oil at 10K miles using mobil 1. I don't understand the logic of changing the filter every other oil change. Unless it's a HUGE filter and cost $$.
jake75 wrote:When I was young, and believe me that was a long time ago, filters were replaced at every other oil change. IMO not a good idea today. That said, most say that you can go longer than 3,000 miles between LOF. That is probably the better environmental choice.
So with Mobil-1 and the NAPA Platinum filter I guess I feel pretty good with the 7.5-10K OCI.Water boy wrote:I use Wally World full synthetic and AcDelco filter. Replace both around 5000. A few oil changes ago my oil test at Blackstone was great. They recommended I could go 7-10K. I'm currently running to 7K.
According to Honda it's more of an environmental issue. Used oil can be recycled, but used filters still hold a lot of oil that then makes it into landfills, and then eventually the groundwater. Cutting the number of filters in half would make a pretty substantial impact, especially if a majority of 3k/3mo DIYers adopted this approach. And since Honda has been building, selling and testing engines for a long time, I'm going to guess that they're not suggesting this so that more engines get sludged up and fail. In the long run, that's not going to sell more cars/engines.I don't understand the oil filter skip suggestion. It must be used for "cost of ownership" purposes by the marketing department.
I agree and probably will, but I'm going to bet that they tell me that I can go a lot longer.Highly recommend a Blackstone test. Better to know than guess.
GM is touting that as an environmental benefit with their canister style filters. A smaller item to dispose of, and no metal can. But it's interesting how things always come back around, this "new fangled" style filter was the same one they were using prior to spin-on's.jake75 wrote:Maybe the oil filters on the 09-10 models that use the inserts are more environmentally sound.
Yep. That's what I noticed in the case of my Sonic. There really isn't any set OCI in the manual, GM only states at 7500 miles "Check engine oil level and oil life percentage. Change engine oil and filter, if needed." Curiously, my OLM seems to decrease 1% in approximately 75 miles. Others have their lasting much longer, looks like my style of driving will have me doing ~7500 mile OCI's on mine though.Water boy wrote:I've read that some manufacturers don't have a specific mileage change interval. It only refers to the "oil life monitor".
Honda builds and sells more gasoline engines than probably any other manufacturer, and from what I understand have been recommending this for years now. The Maintenance Minder in my CR-V has two "main item" codes: A & B. A says to replace the engine oil, B says replace engine oil and oil filter. The minder comes up when oil life gets down to 15% remaining, but there is also a note to replace the oil once every 12 months regardless.ColonelPanic wrote: If the manufacturer specifies it can be ran twice, I wouldn't have a problem with their recommendations.
