Debadging

Did a search and didnt find anything...Can someone fill me in on how to do this properly and how to avoid damaging the paint. Thanks

I love a search challenge!I found a couple of threads, one on some techniques to do it at http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=3317, and another one about CaCathy13's problems with some paint discoloration from using goo gone to get the last of the sticky gum off at http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=5231.Basic technique is to use some strong thin string, dental floss, something like that, and work it back and forth to saw through the gum that holds the badges on. Then find a way to remove whatever is left of the gum. Probably a good idea to clean and wax at least the affected area when done.I used floss and goo gone, and had no trouble or paint discoloration, but CaCAthy13 has a Neptune, mine's satellite, so any slight clouding would be a lot harder to see on mine than hers.

you want to really heat up the badges with a hair dryer. will allow you to take the badging right off, very little need for goo gone or WD40. I debadged mine and even relocated my TRD emblems. no probs, they stuck right back on in a different location.

when removing the emblems at work we use a plastic knife to remove emblem and just pick away at the adhesive pad it will come off easly. but the heating up and the dental floss sound just as easy.

I heated and used fishing line (much better than floss) on the badges, but no matter what you will still have some sort of sticky residue on the body....use extreme caution if you use any sort of chemical to take it off...you could just keep heating the sticky and "roll" the stuff off.... good luck!!

i just used my finger to rub it off, and then washed my car. i dont think chemicals are even needed.

The pros use a heat gun and an alcohol based cleaner. They take badging off of cars within 1 minute after heating and the cleaner takes all of the adhesive off without messing up the paint or clear coat. The cleaner does leave a very light residue on the vehicle from breaking down the adhesive. A simple rinse or wash will resolve this issue. These guys remove badges all day long, everyday. They are body shop guys. They use the same process to take off vinyl letters as well. If you do not have a heat gun then a hair drier will do but take much longer. Be careful not to let it heat up to much of the vehicle. Since you are taking the badge off just heat up the badge and not to much of the surrounding area. Heat can be dangerous to the paint of the vehicle. I believe that is why some members may have damaged their clear coat and now it looks cloudy.
