That Rattle in the Dash

Post by gjswaff »

I read somewhere, on this forum, about the 09/10 Vibes having a rattle in the dash board. My 09 GT did not have a rattle, well, not until this past week when I drove it to Texas. I-10 and I-20 in Louisiana are the most beat up freeways I have ever traveled. And when i got to Ft. Worth, I could not believe how bad the city streets are. My mother in-law's street was nothing but patched asphalt, if there weren't any patches there would be no pavement. The whole town seemed to be that way. So after a week of traveling those roads, I now have that annoying little rattle. It's not real bad. I can't even hear it if the stereo is on. But, I would still like to fix it. My Vibe was almost pristine before that trip and I would like to keep it that way for as long as possible. Any suggestions out there on what that rattle is and how to fix it? I'm also thinking about getting the suspension checked out for worn bushing and such. Next time, I'll drive my wife's car out there!

Do you only hear it at low speeds like when going through a parking lot? If so, I would guess it is the steering column rattle. Well documented and the only fix I've heard of is replacement of the steering column. I never got around to getting it done under warranty, and in any case at least one person had the column replaced and the rattle came back, so I wasn't that worried about fixing it. I rarely hear it so it doesn't bother me. (At least it doesn't chirp and squeak like my old Mitsubishi Mirage).

Thanks Kincaid! Yes, it does seem to be coming from the steering column. I can even feel it a little bit in the steering wheel at slow speeds. Not worth replacing the whole column, though. I'll just live with it, too. I also just wanted to make sure it was nothing dangerous.
