25A door fuse keeps blowing

Post by chevyman95 »

I have a 2004 Pontiac Vibe with 170k miles. Everything has been working great. I replaced the head unit with an aftermarket unit last night and replaced the speakers with aftermarket speakers this afternoon. Everything worked well and I drove it 20 minutes. I walked back to it 2 hours later and noticed the remote didn't unlock the doors. I cranked it up and rolled the windows down. Now the power windows and power locks don't work at all. The 25A door fuse under the dash is blown and when I replace it the fuse will blow again immediately when I lock the doors. Any ideas? Thanks

Reads like a screw or panel pin on a wire, shorting out. Quickest thing, take the door skins off and check for nicks or flat spots in the wiring where it got pinched or metal pierced the wiring. From their with the door skins off unplug all the power controls put a new fuse, plug each item in one at a time to isolate the problem.

My guess is that in the process of installing one of the speakers, you moved a power door lock wire into a position causing it to be a direct short to ground when the power door locks are either opened or closed. Pull the doors apart and check all the wires. For testing purposes, I'd use a smaller fuse (20amp) to lessen the possibility of damaging the wiring/fuse box.

Ok so I figured out one part of the problem. Apparently I am a moron and accidentally drilled a screw through part of the drivers door wiring harness. I fixed the wiring and hooked everything back up and installed a new 25A fuse but I still have no power locks or windows. The only thing I can think of is I did try a 30A fuse earlier because I didn't have a 25A and the fuse didn't blow but it sounded like something under the dash made a popping noise.

Now you've made it sporting! You need to find a complete and comprehensive wiring diagram for your Vibe. Then trace the power path from the start (battery) to the blown fuse, wire, splice, fusible link, that couldn't handle 30 amps. Sounds easier than it usually is.
Sorry, I don't have a wiring diagram and neither does my local library. Good wiring diagrams seem hard to find, maybe someone else here can direct you to one.

This is the diagram in the manual. I do have 12v power to the 25A fuse but I'm kind of at a loss as to what to check after that. I don't know if I could have fried the integration relay or what.

So I found another blown fuse a 30A fuse (one of the bigger box type) under the dash. Now the windows, mirrors, and sunroof work but the locks and the dome lights still aren't functioning.

Ill update this, I fixed the problem. I patched up the wiring that I drilled into and I replaced the 25A door fuse underneath the dash, there are three maxi style fuses beside the fuse panel under the dash there and I had to replace the back 30A maxi fuse there as well. Lastly I went and got an integration relay (green box near the fuse panel under dash) and replaced it as well. I did have to reprogram my remotes but now everything is fixed. thanks

Maybe you're NOT a moron! Sounds like you did an awesome job of diagnosing and correcting the damage! Thanks for the detail of what it took to correct your "accident". :D
