New member checking in!

Post by Th17kit »

Hello, I'm excited to be here! I recently purchased an '09 Vibe GT and I'm very pleased. I feel like the Vibe has one of the best price/quality ratios out there. Here's a little (haha okay it turned into a lot) background to my purchase:

I have a few requirements: wagon, cause they get better gas mileage and have storage for bikes/gear internally. Manual, cause driving manual is more fun. A little style and a decent sound system. Good safety features. Also I had to buy in May/June, cause I won't have time later.

I'm replacing a '96 Honda Accord with 230k while still on a pretty tight budget. I live in Colorado and spend a lot of time driving in the mountains, especially in the winter, so I was looking at wagons either AWD or FWD. I had it narrowed down to the Honda Fit (09 redesign and up), and the Subaru Impreza wagon, but those are expensive used, Subarus can get pricey to repair, and the Fit doesn't have much power for the hills, nor stability control unless it's a really late model. I had to widen my search and stumbled across someone selling an '09 Vibe GT on here. I hadn't considered the Vibe, but it didn't take long to convince me it was a great option. I found one to test drive and was really impressed!! In hindsight, it did in fact take a little too long to convince me cause the seller received a higher offer just after I bought my ticket to Georgia to pick it up! He was very cool about all of it (offered me the car at the higher price/offered to refund my ticket) but I decided I couldn't stretch the budget to his new price.

Forlorn, I spent a few days reflecting, and realized that all I really wanted was an '09-10 GT manual. So I used CL, carfinder.com and a bunch of other sites and couldn't find a manual, let alone a manual GT in any nearby states. Nor had there been any on sale in the last 6 months! The ones that were for sale were way too expensive from dealers and had auto trans. I really started despairing at this point.

Early one morning carguru.com (great site) lists an '09 Vibe manual that just (as in, that morning) had it's price lowered by $3000! I could afford it! I called the dealership, asked all the questions, looked at Carfax, and it seemed to check out. Two days later my girlfriend and I were on a plane to Houston Tx! Yeehaw! We test drove, did the paperwork and got on the road for a mini vacation/car honeymoon! I've never been to Texas, and what a fun trip it turned out to be: We stopped to see some friends who were "drinkin' at the lake and gettin' rowdy on jetskis", a scene complete with giant mud spewing camo trucks, many Keystone Lights, and tornado wrecked houses in the background. We saw West, Texas (of fertilizer plant explosion fame), Waco (need I say more?) and Dallas. Had the best BBQ in my life in Fort Worth. Drove on Route 66 and stayed in the famous Tucamcari, NM. Visited friends and stuffed face with green chili and sopapillas in Santa Fe, then took the scenic route past Sand Dunes national park in the San Juan Valley.

With 1,200 miles under my belt in this car I can say I'm very pleased with the Vibe. I would not have found it without the help of this forum! I'm still in the process of fixing up the car, it's missing some hub center caps and new tires will be on it in a week or so. I will post pics then.

Things to do:
  • replace missing wheel well shields/covers
  • 3m spray on paint protector for one spot with missing clearcoat
Things completed:
  • Replace summer tires - Sumitomo HTR Z III 225/45 R18 (extra 1/2 inch width for better traction!)
  • Changed cabin air filter
  • Installed K&N Typhoon engine intake
  • 20% tint all around
  • Removed crazy giant Texas emissions sticker from windshield
  • Installed Bushwacker rear bumper protector for Toyota Matrix
  • Replace missing center caps
  • Replace faulty radio knobs
Things I'm contemplating:
  • Replace head unit to get bluetooth and USB functionality
Things I'm not going to do:
  • Replace missing center console divider (the one with the "Y" shape) - $37 is too much for that little thing.

Nice intro to what you recently acquired. Seeing how we have the identical drive-train, I was curious as to your mileage on the road trip home. I get 35-37mpg all highway in the summer AND 32-34 mpg all highway in the winter (winter blend gas derates mpg's). Glad you still found one after the Georgia deal fell through. What color is yours? Post pics soon & want to see an up close of the Matrix bumper protector. May need to add that to my list of mods!

I recorded 35 mpg on one tank when we averaged 65mph, but for the first two tanks we were doing 80mph and averaged 26mpg. Maybe there was some headwind, I don't know. Two of the tires are quite bald so I would think that reduces mileage too.

I'll get pics of the car next weekend when the new tires arrive and I have time to wax the finish!

Neat story! So did you get the Mystic Blue GT from Jeff Haas Mazda? If so, I looked at that one a few weeks ago and kind of considered it. I pointed out all of the defects to the sales guy, (all different tires, knobs, etc) and showed him how to install the hatch cover. I schooled him on the Vibes! I did notice that they dropped the price from about $13K down to $11K during the time I was watching, I'm sure due to the manual trans. I saw it was gone last week, and figured someone got a great deal. Wish I had known you were in town, we could have had a mini Vibe meet someplace. I'll bet you drove right by my house at the tollway & Hwy 290!

No idea on that loose part, but the car I looked at had the front license plate mount in the back, since it originally came from Louisiana.

My car is missing the front splash shield also, plus the under car shields were all torn up and hanging on by zip ties. I plan to eventually replace the front shield simply to make the bumper more stable, as it is a bit flimsy right now. But it has run fine for about 25K miles now.

Good luck with it and glad you enjoyed your Texas vacation!

That part is in the Toyota parts list as "Right Air Deflector Shield" and is in the radiator support parts diagram. Here it is in Vibe form at GMPartsCenter.net. Unfortunately it doesn't show it attached so it's hard to say how it goes on. My guess is it's buried down by the right side of the radiator where it's almost impossible to see with the splash shields on.

Glad you were able to pick up another Vibe after the one on here didn't work out for you. A 1200 mile road trip is a heck of a way to christen a "new" car :P! I am dying to know what color it is and I'm assuming it's a GT? I'm also impressed to see that you have already added the K&N CAI to it. I'm sure you agree it's a must-have for every 2009-2010 2.4L owner ! Looking forward to seeing pictures...

Bring on the pics! I did a little study of the Vibe. Check it out!
trb wrote:So did you get the Mystic Blue GT from Jeff Haas Mazda?

Yes!! That's the one! I called them the day they lowered the price. They seemed reputable given the Google reviews and I worked with Brenda (wonder if you met with her?). That's a shame we didn't meet up. Man, small world!
trb wrote:I pointed out all of the defects to the sales guy, (all different tires, knobs, etc) and showed him how to install the hatch cover.

I definitely noticed the handsome hatch cover in the trunk! They neglected to tell me about the knobs and tires (in the video Brenda sent me she only showed my the best tire :?) Regardless I saved enough money to more than make up for new tires, the trip, and a few other repairs.
Fortunately I'd already read about the knobs and center cap issues on here, so those didn't phase me. In fact the new tires and center caps are supposed to arrive tomorrow and I just replaced the radio knobs today (a big thanks to Tim Pollauf for sending some my way!). The only real problem I've identified is the clear coat failure on the hood, I figure a few years from now I'll need to get that repainted.

I'm really impressed you found the part! I hope my radiator doesn't fall out, lol. I'll be keeping that piece just in case.

I really like it. Plus, $125 off CL couldn't be beat. The engine sound is much more interesting, and I really dig the little whistle of the air gate opening when accelerating. I couldn't say if it's improved my mileage, but I just recorded 33 mpg with 60hwy/40city driving with a lot of hard accelerations. I could get used to that.
I have an issue with the intake rubbing against the strut stiffener (or whatever it is). See pics. I forced the tube as far into the rubber gasket behind the engine, anyone know how I might fix this so it doesn't get worse? It seems like it's already through the powder coating.

Yes, I must say I am more than a little jealous of your rare Mystic Blue Metallic GT (just don't tell my Vibe that :P!). Glad to hear you already got the little "bugs" worked out with it.

The intakes on both our Vibes have little rub marks on the powder coating where they hit against the OEM strut braces during installation. It's very cramped under that strut brace. Our intakes do not actually rub against the strut brace while driving, etc. though, so I'm not really sure what to tell you other than playing around with adjusting the intake some more.

My GT is the Hot red metallic but I do love the mystic blue. None were available in my area. I think the red is great too but you see less mystic blues around here (far upstate western NY).

I've seen two Mystic Blue Metallic Vibes in person and both were 1.8L Bases. I would probably really freak if I saw a Mystic Blue Metallic GT in person :P!

Thanks all!

I'll have to go check the intake and see if I can adjust it some more. Perhaps I can muscle it down deeper.

I've got to say the new Sumitomo HTR Z III tires I just put on are pretty awesome. Very quiet compared to the crappy ones I had on before and the cornering stability is a night and day difference. Total for tires, shipping and mounting was $625 so I think I got a good deal for summer performance tires in 18".

That is a good price for tires. I paid about $824 for my Bridgestone Potenzas and they are great tires, but I'll probably only get another year out of them as they are down to about 5-6mm after 18 months and 25K miles. :D I found some Kuhmo tires for about $450 at Discount Tire, but they are just basic tires, not real performance ones. If my daughter ends up keeping the car, I'll just get them for her.

If your looking for performance tires you should try continental extreme contact DWS. Great tire and I paid about 400 for the set. I also came from the Potenzas REO.40.

I got those tires at Onlinetires.com - I called first and had no issues. They were by far the cheapest source.

Those are all season, and I'm running full summer and dedicated winter given the driving conditions when going skiing. I've seen enough cars in the ditch and gotten stuck myself so I find it worth the money for an extra setup.
