2004 transmission seal replacment

Post by shout2lord »

I have an 04 with automatic transmission. The seal is leaking. I've gone through all the steps and am at the last one of taking the CV joint out of the transmission. The book says to "pry" it out with a prybar or screwdriver.
I don't seem to have anything to pry against. If I stick the screwdriver up in there, there seems to be a metal ring around the joint that will just bend when I pry.
How do I get this thing out??

Thanks

Here is a link to a pic of the joint.

There is a lip on the axle that you should be able to pri against. You'll likely need a long heavy screw driver or a pry bar. I haven't had to do this on my Vibe, but it looks like you could lever against the transmission casing here.

Edit: I'm sorry, I didn't read your full description before responding. Is the right circle I made rubber or plastic?

the right circle (bigger one) is metal. It's up to the side so I'm not sure I can get a screw drver in there to pry. A pry bar is out of the question. I will try and update you.
My biggest concern is the metal ring nudged up against the trans. In that pic its almost exactly half clean and half greasy. When I wedge the prybar or screw driver between it and the trans to pop it back, it bends. I dont want to screw it up and have to replace something else ;)

Your picture shows a gray metal layer between the brown axle part and the tranny housing. Do not pry on that gray metal layer, it is soft metal, and will distort easily. It is pressed on the axle, acts as a dust/dirt shield, and it's not hard to booger it up to where it will screw up the new seal. If you booger it up you can just remove it from the axle and not replace it, but better if you can leave it intact. The brown part is ok to pry on, but hard to get a bite on it. I once used a pipe wrench to grab the axle shaft, and then tapped the wrench outward with a mallet to pop the axle free of the spring loaded whatever that grabs it, sort of a MacGuyver slide hammer. A sharp pop seemed to work better than constant pressure

Joatmon was right on the soft metal. It is a "dust cover". I could not get a pipe wrench on it because of the cross brace and didn't want to take that off because it was supporting a motor mount.
I could not get a good angle with anything but finally got one with a pry bar. Put it against the joint and whacked it with the rubber mallet 3-4 times. Popped right out.
I had changed the filter and gasket a few months ago and there wasn't anything bad in there. However, on the shaft that goes into the trans, there was some "melted" stuff on it. Looked like spastic, but had to be metal. kind of odd. Nothing looks out of place when looking inside.
Changed out the seal. The old one was more pliable. Took it to the carwash today and we will see what happens.

thanks for all the help.
