Kelly Explorer Plus sloppy handling?

Post by AZViking »

Just replaced my Firestone Fuzion Hri with Kelly Explorer Plus and now my steering feels sloppy compared to before and cornering feels like I'm going to flip over. I might be over-reacting, my Fuzions were close to the wear indicators, so steering was a little less responsive than with new tires. But do these Explorers have that much softer of a sidewall that it feels like you could go flying off the road with just a twitch of the wheel?

Ok... Didn't do my homework on speed rating affecting handling... Switching from what appears to have been an H rated tire to what I think is S or T might make a difference... Correct me if I'm wrong.

What is the load rating of your tires? It will be a 2 digit number like 89 following the tire size. Depending on load rating you may have to increase or decrease the air pressure in your tires. Also look at the sidewall construction Could a difference in the construction like 1 ply polyester, 2 ply polyester, 1 ply polyester + 1 ply kevlar, etc.

HRI's were 87
Explorer's are 91

I'll have to check the current pressures.

I don't have the Kelly Explorer tires (did consider them though) BUT I do have the Kelly Navigator touring gold for my A/S winter tires. There is literally no difference in the way the Vibe drives and am very pleased with them. In my case they are 16" instead of 18" so the ride is a bit softer/smoother (good for potholes & chunks of snow/ice). 60000 mile warranty, 560 treadwear rating, "A" traction, "A" temperature, 91 load index, "H" speed rating. I can't imagine what little difference you'd have would make the car drive that much worse :? Maybe some other issues like the way they were mounted or something else ???

After calming down, I remembered that certain sections of the interstate I use for my commute have nice little grooves that apparently only I notice when driving on new tires. My wife's brand new Yokohama Avid Touring S's on her Sportage feel the same way (only to me) on the same stretch of road.
