Rear Brakes?

Post by burrpenick »

I also did a search before posting this but didnt find any specifics on the rear shoes. My 03 base Vibe has 167K miles and still has the original shoes out back. I have adjusted them up a couple of times, but they still have brake material on them. I did notice one shoe- I believe the front one, is not worn as much as the back shoe (on the same wheels). I've done older cars that usually had a one shoe that was a bit longer/different than the other one. Does anyone know if the VIBE shoes are identical or is there a different one for the leading (front) vs the trailing side. I was wondering if it would be possible to simply reverse these so they are worn evenly. I actually purchased new shoes around the 100K mark but since it was not ready I"ve never installed them.

What is the MILEAGE RECORD for miles on rear shoes for the VIBE?

Is the excess wear only happening on one shoe or is it the front or rear on both sides?
If the problem exists on only one shoe maybe they aren't adjusted properly and one of them is dragging on the drum. Or maybe the hydraulic part that presses the shoes isn't level in it's application of pressure.

To your question, they appear to be a mirror image of each other. Here is a picture of the brake shoes from rockauto.

However, simply turning around warn shoes is not a good idea. If they are adjusted improperly only a very small part of the brake shoe will be making contact with the drum. I think it would be a good idea to have someone look at the brakes.

My Vibe has almost 150k miles on the stock shoes/drums, and they still have lots of meat left on them. I don't think it's unusual to have them last 200k+ miles.
