Math question

Post by 808 Vibes »

What is the difference between a foot and a linear foot? Would it be cheaper to buy a contractor box of tack strip (400 linear ft) for $130 if I only need tack strip in two of the 6 rooms? The two rooms were said to be 10' x 12'.

There is no difference in this case. A linear foot means a foot long. It is sometimes used to distinguish been length and area. If the tack strip was 400 feet long, and three inches wide (3 inches is 1/4 foot, which is too wide for tack strip, but it made the math easy ;), it would be 400 linear feet, but only 100 square feet (400 feet long x 1/4 foot wide = 100 square feet). For the tack strip, the length is more important, so they specify linear feet. If you were buying carpet, area is the more important characteristic, so they price it in square feet (actually square yards)

for a 10'x12' room, you would need 44' of tack strip (10+12+10+12). Two rooms would need 88' feet. You gave the price for the 400' bundle, but you didn't give the price for an individual piece. Looks like it typically comes in 4' pieces, so you would need 22 of them (88/4). If you were to buy them individually, the price for each would have to be less than about $6 in order to keep the total cost under $130.

Looking on line for mainland tack strip prices, I see 400' packs in the $30-$40 range, so the $130 you'd have to pay seems really high. I guess that's a fact of life you have to accept to live on paradise island, but it might be worth looking around some more. Maybe even talk to a carpet installer, they must buy that stuff in bulk and might offer you your 88' for less money than the consumer retail stores.

Thank you. So maybe buy a little box for the two rooms with wood subfloor? The little boxes are about $20 each, I think. I also will need the concrete type for a very large room and small office with concrete subfloor.
