embarrassing moment on the way to work

Post by Mazzy21 »

So, although I guess I've been part of the 'Vibe community' for a while now, having owned one for the last 6 years, I never knew there actually was a community until now, with Gen Vibe. :)

So on my way to work this morning, in my new little GT, I came upon a 1stGen in the lane beside me. What occurred next was me completely embarrassing myself in front of another Vibe owner.

This all happened in just a couple seconds...

So I see the 1stGen and think "hey! vibe!" and look to my right at them with the thought "hi fellow vibe owner". And in that second it took me to think that I passed right by them (they had obviously hit their brakes) and thought "wha.." only to look forward and see a family of ducks crossing both lanes in front of us. I slam the brakes, swerve over into the on-coming lane (no traffic present) and then had to make a second swerve even further because I had come so close to mama duck that she took flight and I almost pegged her with the windshield.

I guess from now on, when I see another Vibe, I'll just smile to myself and maintain forward- facing vision. LOL

I am also glad to hear you and the ducks are okay.

I unfortunately hit a rabbit on my way home from work the other day. I felt horrible, but there wasn't much I could do .

Murderer! What, you couldn't slow down and steer around the rabbit? It's not like it was a turtle. It's practically unavoidable when a turtle darts out of the weeds in front of you. :)

Glad the ducks were unharmed and yes, I too get emotional when rabbits, squirrels, and those dang darting turtles commit suicide under the tire of my Vibe. :(

Glad to hear you escaped that one with nothing but a spiked heartrate!

Still haven't yet had any furry friends find their way to my wheels while driving! A few close calls with rabbits but nothing else! Hoping theres no change to that record :?

I'm terrible about the 'swerve' - except, apparently, when it comes to deer, an animal that can actually cause me harm! Those I tend to hit straight on! LOL But in general I am a swerver, which I know is terribly dangerous. It's just instinct to try and spare the unfortunate creature that decided to cross the road. Many years ago, when I still commuted to work each day (on back/country roads), something very small and furry - to this day I have no idea what it was; a mouse maybe?? - darted out, and, not realizing just how fast I'd been going (since, on those types of roads you can travel your whole trip without seeing another car and basically just zone out and drive), I swerved and then immediately regretted that decision. The car turned sideways and slid about 50 feet. Not terribly far, but scary all the same when you are going sideways down the road. All for something about the size of a frog. I was very thankful that those roads are so desolate in the wee hours of the morning, and definitely drove a LOT slower the rest of the way to work that day.

As for the ducks, I'm glad they are all okay too. :)

Concentrating on forward view is without question paramount in safety, however all of us at one time or another have had the same type of experience. This is exactly why the cell phone/ texting issue is so huge in the news these days. A distracted driver is a dangerous driver. Although I've seen people shaving, applying make-up, reaching for an item on floor, and even reading a book laid on steering wheel.....all at 65mph during rush hour. Thankfully there was no oncoming traffic in opposite lane. Truth be known the experts warn against swerving as many have paid the price with their life in an attempt to avoid hitting an animal. Had you swerved into the path of a family of four, or a tractor trailer, the outcome would have been far more tragic than that of of a squashed duck. Glad it all worked out for you without incident.

A co-worker of mine admitted just a week or two ago to shaving on his way to work sometimes . He travels country roads, but still very dangerous nonetheless.

A few years after I graduated High School, a girl from my class died in a car accident. She was supposedly putting on makeup, went off the road, hit the gravel on the shoulder, lost control and rolled the car.

So many people just do not take driving seriously these days. Kids, adults, doesn't matter. They don't realize how dangerous driving is.

When I first got my license, my mom used to tell me she wasn't worried about me because she knew I was a careful, safe driver. She was worried about all the other drivers on the roads.

That's a white winged dove feather. They are...um, they don't understand how cars work and are very bad about standing in the road and not flying away from danger. I'd have to say that due to it being more difficult to AVOID hitting them, that's like a -10 points :P I've noticed that all of the doves here except feral rock pigeons are too dumb to fly from cars. They always just try to run out of the way, or swoop down in front of you out of nowhere and scare the **** out of you!

I have to agree with you about doves. I hit one one time in the Vibe because it didn't fly away like other birds typically do :(. I felt horrible because they mate for life and I felt sad for its mate . I have hit like 4 or 5 birds in the Vibe over the past 4 years :|. I have never hit birds in any other vehicle I've ever had/driven.
