moonroof not working...

Post by skeletron »

My moonroof is being weird...the tilt switch seems to be working but the switch to make it slide open is not responding...do you think that i need a new switch or?

Are you sure that when you tilt it closed, it is tilting all the way closed? It won't slide if it thinks it's not. Maybe there is some foreign object keeping it from closing all the way. Maybe there is some foreign object keeping the back edge from dropping down to slide. Seems unlikely that either the control or one of the position sensors is broken, and if it tilts it's not a blown fuse or relay. Did you ever mess around in the switch assembly? I assume this jsut started happening, and not a result of any recent or related mod or maintenance.

Thanks for the reply. It closes all of the way and I believe it tilts all of the way but the slide switch does nothing. It's my wife's main vehicle and there are ZERO modifications done to it performance wise. As for anything obstructing the tract, I have no idea because it doesn't open enough for me to look inside of it...

anyone have any tips/pointers on the best way to trial and error this problem? I'm not the slightest bit inclined on moonroof/sunroof maintenance lol... :?

First thing I'd do would be to take a small miror and look all around from the inside to see if anything obvious is in the way. After that it gets electrical. There are position sensing switches in the moonroof so the logic int he switch box can tell if its closed, tilted or slid. If one of those isn't working right, it could keep the glass from sliding. It could be the switch itself and there may be a way to spoof it. It's been a while, I'll have to dig into to it again before I can offer anything useful.

At least its not stuck open

yeah I'm not seeing anything...could it be that the motor is slowly going out? if so, where is it located, how do I swap it, and where can one be found at an affordable price?

not really. The moon roof only has one motor. When the glass is closed and you hit the tilt open button, the motor spins in one direction. When it's tilted open and you hit tilt closed, the motor spins the other way. When its closed and you hit the slide open button, the motor should spin the same was as tilt closed, slide closed turns the motor the same direction as tilt open. Since you can spin the motor one way when it tilts open, the other way when it tilts closed, I'd deduce that the motor is ok,

If its not something mechanical, then maybe it is the switch/light control, but I'm hesitant to assume that only because nobody here has ever had one fail before. It has been a while since i looked at that switch/light control ( for viewtopic.php?t=7209" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ). I'll see if I can dig into it and figure out some way to test the thing. Not sure when I can get to it though, so if anyone else here has any ideas, please chime in. Hopefully we can figure it out without anyone having to drop the headliner

does anyone know the voltage that the switch would be reading on a volt meter?
