air bag module recall on 03/04

Post by leemur »

I was driving in to work this morning and they said Toyota has a recall on Carollas and Matrixes for failing airbag modules. The circuit board fails and the airbag may go off...anytime. Wonder if this is only for the Canada made cars or if NUMMI put them in the Vibes also.

Also...got my starter replaced under powertrain warranty. 75,900 miles on car.

Here is the notice from toyota's website:

Safety Recall D0B (D1B) Preliminary Notice - 2003 to late 2004 Model Year Corolla and Corolla Matrix Vehicles Airbag Wire Harness Installation At the present time, Toyota is currently preparing the remedy.
What is the Condition? The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Module (ECM) in these vehicles could have been manufactured with integrated circuits that are susceptible to internal short circuiting when exposed to certain electrical noise from various vehicle electrical components. If internal short circuit occurs in the IC, the front airbag(s) and/or seat belt pretensioners could inadvertently deploy. An airbag that deploys inadvertently can, under some circumstances, increase the risk of minor injury and the possibility of a crash.

When will the Remedy be Available: The remedy procedures will be provided to each dealership shortly. At which time, Toyota will notify owners of covered vehicles by first class mail. Additional information will be posted on this site once the remedy is available.

After looking in my 03 vibe I have an "air bag sensor"(SRS ECU? i'm pretty sure) with TRW(p/n:207771-105) and Toyota(p/n:89170-01010) part number.
Are these units possibly affected also?

This is an issue that will affect 03-04 Vibes. The airbag modules are all made in the same place. Expect a recall for these.

I guess it should be noted that GM has not issued a recall yet.
Toyota doesn't have a good relationship with GM anymore. So GM likely heard about this issue the same time the general public did. Now GM has 3 months to issue a recall of it's own, and they will send a bill to Toyota.

I'm okay with the recall, actually. Not sure why. Maybe see if I can test drive a few cars.

I do have to wonder why, in all the years this site has been around, and in the 10 years these 03/04s have been on the road, have we not had ONE PERSON on Genvibe this has happened to?

Makes me wonder if it's really such a huge problem.

The noise-creating electrical component could also be unique to the Toyota because the cars were not totally the same. Let's hope.

My question is, what is the source of the problem? "Preliminary Notice - 2003 to late 2004 Model Year Corolla and Corolla Matrix Vehicles Airbag Wire Harness Installation"

Yet it goes on to talk about the module. Which is it?

If it is an air bag wiring harness, they will have to entirely gut your interior to replace it. If that is the case, I am not looking forward to the monkeys at the dealer tearing the crap out of the car. I had a bad seat belt buckle switch on my Hyundai that triggered the SRS light, brought it into the dealer and had it replaced. They did about $100 worth of damage to trim parts in the process of seat removal and installation, and now I have rattles that weren't there before after I made them fix what they jacked up.

If it's just the module, then it's just pulling out the lower dash trim around the shifter I do believe. You can see it looking back there with the console in place, but not sure if it can come out without removing the console. Still a very good chance at getting parts damaged. :?

Just read about this in the newspaper. Guess the vibe gets to go see the dealer for the first time since belonging to me.

Just like I said on facebook:

Personally, I think Toyota wants all these recalls, especially with the really old models. The minor cost of sending the recall notices and part... and all these people now in the showroom!

Seriously, a wiper blade that may turn within its mount while frozen down or covered in snow? That's just owner stupidity for not clearing your windshield! ...but why not drag the owner in, let the tech take 15 mins to check two bolts while a savvy salesman shows off the new model!

These recalls won't make Toyota a poorer company.

Well, the Canadian recall on the 03-04 Vibes are out. I wonder how many are still on the road? (probably a good 15000 IMO)

Transport Canada wrote:A total of 20,598 Pontiac Vibe hatchbacks from 2003-2004 are being recalled due to a defect in the supplemental restraint system that could result in an inadvertent deployment of the front airbag(s) and/or seatbelt pretensioner(s).

If this occurs in a non-impact situation, the driver could be startled and possibly lose control of the car.

GM dealers will install an in-line jumper wiring harness to correct the issue.

So if I am the 2nd owner of my 03 Vibe, should I be receiving something in the mail from GM or should I call a local GM dealer and inquire if there are any recalls on my Vibe. Having an airbag deploy randomly doesn't sound like much fun especially if I was doing 75mph down the highway....

Good question. I think quite a few of us on here are second, third or fourth hand owners. How have they handled notifying about earlier recalls like window retaining nuts? :?:

I am the third owner of my 2006 Base Vibe, it had a recall for the ECM module, and GM sent me a postcard got it replaced last Friday. I believe the different state's DMV give all auto companies access to their database so they can send out the recalls to the current owners. Stop in any GM dealer and they can do a VIN search in their database and tell you if a recall action for your car is complete or still outstanding.

I got my air bag module recall letter yesterday. Said they plan to put a filter in the wiring. Like a DSL phone line filter is what it sounds like. No fix yet for it though.

Yes, the DMV must give them the information, just received a recall for my 2004 AWD Vibe for the ECM module, I had this car less than a year and I am the fourth owner on that one. Still nothing on the airbags or the window bolts yet.

I just got back from driving 1000 miles roundtrip to get a recall letter today April 16th and am glad my airbag did not "inadvertently deploy" on the turnpike - geez! I have owned this since 2006 (7 years now) and I still love my Vibe. No salesman is going to talk me into trading it in either. I hope parts become available soon. Any word on how long that will take? Can I duct tape it til then? ;)

I don't trust my local GM dealer and will go to the better one the next city over for service.

I got notices in the mail today for both my 03 GT and my 04 Base. No parts available, awaiting next letter. I came here looking for more info, guess you guys are all in the same boat :)

So, if notices for the Matrix went out in January, have any of you Matrix owners had yours fixed or are you also awaiting parts?

I decided not to wait for the second letter and started calling dealerships within driving distance and BINGO one of them said they had the necessary part/airbag wiring harness to do the recall fix and we made an appointment for yesterday, May 10th.
I went in and brought the first recall letter with me and they told me it would take at least 3 hours cause after the install it had to dry. I also requested an annual inspection so they had the car for 3.5 hours but its ALL FIXED. :D

I picked up my vibe just a few weeks ago and the old owner actually called me up and told me about the recall!

At this point, I"m honestly not sure it worth the hassle to take "storm" into the shop...I've been searching around online and it seems it is 1 in a million that these air bags deploy on the vibe.
