Oil Changes

Post by sking23 »

I have been told by several people that with the Vibe oil changes you have to be strict about them. Stating that the oil runs hot and thin. They say it caused your lifters the bend an your motor to blow. This one mechanic told me to run 10 40 in the summer because it's thicker oil. What are your opinions on this? Do you have any advice for me? (I HAVE Only ha My vibe for a year but have driven it about 4 months total because My motor blew up)

Hey Skiing,
My opinion is that it is important to be "strict" on oil changes for ANY vehicle. That being said, the 1.8 liter Vibe/toyota appears to be a relatively hearty engine. My Vibes engine NEVER runs hot! Read up on 10-40 before you put it in anything, I'm not a fan of it!
I am a huge fan of Castrol oil, never seems to come out "watery". I'd stick to the manufactures' recommended oil: 5W-30, I believe.
Oh yea, I am also a huge fan of Purolator PURE ONE oil filters from Advance Auto or Kmart. Walmart supertech oil filters also seem high quality.
Toyota type 4 auto tranny fluid can be purchased inexpensively at CARQUEST Auto parts.
Use the search feature of this site to find links to "oil" threads and other sites devoted to oil.

I guess it depends on your definition of "strict." If you take your 10 year old car to the shop for an oil change, then ignore it for 6 months/5000 miles.. It's possible it could blow no matter what oil you put in. Older engines burn and sometimes leak oil and you have to top them off regularly. A thicker oil might mask the symptoms but also create more problems. Put in the recommended oil weight, top it off every few weeks, and change it regularly (how frequently depends on the quality of the oil &filter) and you'll be fine.

I am still getting used to this forum. I have never been on one before so I am just trying to get the hang of it.
