The Vibe... Totaled

Post by captainofiron »

A couple days before Christmas, we were driving home from having lunch with my parents, we were waiting at an intersection to turn left and get on the highway.

The green arrow comes on, there are 3 lanes of oncoming traffic, the first 2 lanes have cars stopped, maybe 2-3 cars deep.
The last lane to the right is empty.

I start turning left and I usually glance over when crossing an intersection, and I see a grey chevy cruze flying down the empty right lane. I put my foot down on the accelerator so she will not t-bone us or hit the passenger-side door where my wife is.

She keeps coming and nails the right rear wheel.

we get sideways, but I steer into the skid and keep us from spinning or going down the side of the overpass onto I-25 north.

The cops finally show up after I had been calling 911 for about 15 minutes. It would just ring and ring.

The cop takes our statement, the witnesses statement, and gets to the girl, she is texting the whole time. I wanted to grab her phone throw it to the ground and stomp on it. She was probably doing that when she was driving.

Anyways the witness says she never hit her brakes until she hit us.

The car was totaled.

We almost had payed it off, good thing though is we are both ok, and we got more from the insurance than we had initially payed for it.

That Sucks! The main thing is no one was hurt! Looks like the rear axel is bent. How much are the damages? You want to sell it?

The insurance totalled it.

Yea the rear axle is bent, and the part that the hub bolts to is bent to the back and down.

Im not sure how much the damages were, but Im sure it was high, since that axle is a complete assembly and not something that even the deal would have, it would probably be a junk yard hunt item, where you would search for a vibe with front end damage.

The insurance gave me 2500 more than we paid for it, so I am happy about that, but not happy about having to replace such a reliable car

Ouch. Another good car claimed by the cell phone. I probably would have done bad things to her phone had my car been hit (I also would have a totaled Vibe in my garage, waiting a near rear end).

Good thing there were no injuries. Was the Cruze ruined? How fast did she hit you?

Any chance you're going to try and find another Vibe?

Thanks, yea that is the most important thing

My guesstimate was that she was doing 35ish, the front right hand side was messed up pretty bad, but hers was driveable.

I found a couple vibe's for sale, they are all really high though compared to what we paid for ours, but my wife wants an SUV with more creature comforts. She has really fallen in love with the infotainment center in my Veloster Turbo

That sucks about the Vibe, but glad to hear no one was hurt.

I seriously probably would have grabbed her cell phone and stomped on it! I HATE when I see people messing around with their cell phones, looking at themselves in the mirror, putting on makeup, etc. while driving. People just don't take driving seriously nowadays .

YEP ... me too :D This is the kind of damage that is easy and inexpensive to fix. Somebody should purchase this and resurrect it back to life ;)

Oh, im sure someone will be selling it in Craigslist in a few weeks after they fix it all back up, salvage title and all. Sorry to hear about your loss, but at least it was not worse. Good luck with your new car search.

Sucks to hear that Vibe is gone but glad you are all ok. Cars can be replaced.

If she likes the Velostar and wants an SUV might I suggest the Kia Sorento? It is made by KIA but KIA is owned by Hyundai and the Sorento is a great SUV with good MPG's and a nice ride. My best friend has always owned VW's since she started driving in the 1990's. She bought a Sorento for a growing family and that 2004 VW Jetta has just sat in the driveway.

Anyway good luck in your search

I will look into the Sorento, I have been wanting her to buy something cheap and reliable, but she is dead set on an SUV, we will see.

Thanks to everybody for the comments

I thought the sore to was the largest Kia suv, isn't the sport age the smallest Kia suv ( built on the same platform as the Tucson)?
Anyway glad everyone is okay, the car can be replaced ( though it does hurt in a different way) but lives cannot.

Sorry to hear about your loss I also totaled my 2009 in October, in a different way though, a lady puled out right in front of me while I was doing forty mph and I t-boned her front axle. I also got more from insurance than what I paid for it mostly thanks to cash for clunkers and the Vibe's awesome resale value, I still miss my baby but feel a little better with what I bought this past Saturday. A silver 2012 Cadillac SRX base model, it was more than I wanted to spend but between rebates and my GM supllier discount I paid 28k for a 37k car. So basically I got a new one for the same price or cheaper than a used one, also from the side view it kinda looks like a 2009/2010 Vibe. I would post pics but can not figure out how to, but a quick Google search will show you what it looks like.

EXACT same thing happened to me. 21 year old, likely on her phone as well. She got a ticket but it didn't make me feel much better. Had my wife and 2 year old in the car and thanks to my above average driving skills *heh heh* I took the brunt of the impact at the driver's headlight.

Bought an '09 to replace my '08 and am feeling the love again.

Glad no one was injured, property can be repaired or replaced, people are far more precious.

A new 2012 Cadillac SRX for $28,000 is awesome. In my "youth" I bought a 2 year old 1964 Cadillac DeVille Convertible for $2,600 from a person I was told was "mafia" connected in the Canton, Ohio area. In 1967 I bought a new Cadillac Deville Convertible for $5,600. A few years later married with a new child I traded that on a more sensible used 1968 Deville 4 door hardtop. When you think that an entry level Chevy Equinox has a msrp of almost $25,000 . . . .may be I should look at a SRX ;).

Well right now GM has a $5000 rebate on the 2012 SRX to go along with $1000 customer loyalty which I didn't qualify for since my car was totaled and gone but, I did get a $1000 private offer in the mail from GM good on any 2012/13 vehicle that I used. Like I said before I really didn't want to spend that much but couldn't pass it up. It was the only one on the lot and while I was getting financed 2 other people showed up to buy it, one of them waited for 45 mins hoping i would back out and not buy it, he ended up getting an Arcadia.
