Trailer wiring with cig lighter?

Post by 09GT »

Ok, so first off don't laugh :0

I'm putting in the trailer wiring kit in my 09 Gt, the type that has to run a wire to the battery. I only figure on pulling a light utility trailer a couple times a year so I want to get this done as easy as possible. I notice the kit comes with a 10 amp fuse... the cig lighter has a 10 amp fuse. The instructions that come with the kit say max stop/turn light 1 per side 2.1 amps, max tail lights 4.2 amps.... that's 6.3 amps. Seems I can just run the hot wire from the harness to the cig lighter, then coil it up & stow it in the rear side panel when not in use?

Yes?

Will I die?

You could probably do it that way. I ran the heavy red wire that came with the kit to the battery, with with the included fuse. Takes a little longer, but the wiring is now "out of sight, out of mind".

Interesting idea! I'm in the same boat, hooking up a trailer to move a relative either this weekend or the next, and didn't want to take a long time setting up the wiring. Mine is on order and I hope I get it Wed or Thurs. I think I'll try this too since I have an extra lighter plug.

Seems silly to me, do it right and do it once.

Run the wire under the car up to the fuse box under the hood. Wire it permanently.

I also installed a continuous duty solenoid so that the line was only powered when the ignition is on. Not necessary but the way I did it.

What happens when you or someone else knocks the plug loose? Guess what? No lights.
