konig tires - can't get them off

Post by 2003vibeowner »

I bought a 2003 vibe gt with Konig 17" tires. I have went to 4 different car specialty shops in my city of Edmonton, AB Canada and no one has the SPLINE TUNER LUG NUT KEY (I believe that's what it's called...I've attached a picture) to get the tires off. With these Konig's wheels on a standard tire wrench does not work. The seller lost the key to get these off.

I have also attached a picture of my tires. I want to remove these tires altogether and put the originals rims back on which have winter rubber on them already. Even the shop that put the Konig's on did not have the lug nut key to get these tires off. I just came from their shop.

Does anyone know where I can get the lug nut key...if I have to order online how do I know I'm getting the right size? And also where can I buy the original wheel studs and nuts for a 2003 pontiac vibe gt....they obviously changed these too and the seller never gave them to me.

I'm new to owning a vibe so if I'm missing something very obvious to the experts out there on how to get these tires off I'd appreciate any help. I've never had a vehicle where I couldn't use the standard tire iron to get the tires off.
thank you

I know exactly what you're talking about! Welcome to the forums. I, too, have the six-spline lug nuts on my summer tires. I've also gone through two keys. Thus, I know exactly where to find them. double check to make sure they're six spline, then you can either call around to local tire shops to see if they have the key. If they sell aftermarket rims, they'll have the key. My local Discount Tire provided me with the key for less than $10. Otherwise, Ebay has them. I got my first from Brian, who I bought the rims from, second off Ebay, and third from Discount Tire. And follow my advice: always always ALWAYS apply torque from two sides of the key, or it WILL break. It's okay to torque the lug nuts, but don't use, say, a ratchet to loosen the lug nuts, and make sure most of the weight of the car is off the wheel.

I believe a member here is selling a set of OEM lug nuts. Check the For Sale forum. Otherwise, Ebay is your best choice. $20 for twenty nuts, or $100 for twenty nuts from your local tire shop.

And if you decide to sell the konig wheels, I'm sure someone here will want them!

Thanks for the responses. Local shops have not had an adapter that will work. I have now been to 5 different specialty tire stores and car parts retail stores with no luck. Konig themselves can't even help or point me to the exact tool I need as I've been in touch with them too.
I just want these things off LOL what a royal pain.

On another note the previous owner did not leave me with the original lug nuts and the same shops I've been to don't know what lug nuts will fit until I get these Konigs off.
I am looking for a full set of Lug Nuts (25 in total) for a 2003 Pontiac Vibe GT. I am not looking for locking lug nuts or anything custom. I m seeking the lug nuts that would have been the
original lug nuts that came with the car in 2003. Does anyone know of a site where I can get them? Basically I need lug nuts that will work with the original wheels
studs and rims of a 2003 vibe gt front wheel drive.

This is the key I have for mine: http://www.brandsport.com/grla-1921sdkey.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; There's an image on the site there that has all the internal measurements, see if it matches your lugs.

I'll be up in Edmonton on Saturday Dec, 1st. for the GF's staff xmas party and since it's staff only I'll be wandering about the mall in the evening. If your lugs match and you need a hand, let me know!

As for replacement lugs, any M12x1.5 lugs will work. Head over to your local wreckers or PicknPull and grab them off a Corolla. FYI Late model Sunfire/Cavalier lugs are this size as well although make sure you grab the tire iron as well if the cap isn't 21mm!

If the rims you're putting on are steel, check the angle of the seat. http://www.performanceplustire.com/tech ... t-lug-nuts" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Your local retailers in Edmonton should have been able to order a spline key for you from a Canadian supplier such as Fast Wheels or Robert Thibert for the one you have shown. There is an off chance that it is the spline key distributed by DAI that has a slightly larger diameter and spline shape. If they have more that 6 splines chances are that they are made by McGard.

Your OE lugs would have a M12 X1.5mm thread with a 21mm hex. Depending on the wheel would be either an open end if just a conical taper or it could be a shank-flat seat if a OE mag.
