09 Monsoon Sub Upgrade & Other info

Post by Kevin09GT »

Guys,

Made the plunge & Decided to swap out the factory sub with a 12" Infinity Reference I had laying around.. Enclosure custom built from Fiberglass & a foam mold former. Took quite a wihile but I am really pleased with the results. Couple things to mention that I discovered as being in conflict with some of the info I have read on the Monsoon Speakers

1. The Speakers in the system are not 2 Ohm The front doors have the tweeter & midrange wired in Parallel. I just metered the tweeter & it measured a DC resistance of 3.54 ohms....just aboout the standard for any 4 ohm driver. The tweeter also has a small capicitor wired in series with the positive terminal to handle the high pass. It should be no problem to replace these tweeters with just about any other 4ohm tweeter. I can understand how people may assume they are 2 ohm, because if you metered at the amp it would show a lower resistance, but Nope....Drivers are 4 Ohm.

2. Sub swap. Started with some 1" blue foam cut n fit into the cavity. This gave me all the clearances I needed & provided some additional sound baffling along the rear if the enclosure. I then began layup of the glass usine EPOXY RESIN from US Composites... Normal Poly resin will melt the foam almost immediatly... I ended up with a voulme of about 1.3sq ft & finished it off by stuffing it full of poly pillow stuffing after a couple coats of runbberized undercoating on the inside walls. It is a very dead & damped sounding enclosure with no boomy resonant peaks.. Very accurate sound yet still plays very low. I have it running off of a 250w Kicker amp using high level inputs directly from the factory sub. Of all the aftermarket systems I have installed over the years, I can honestly say the output & quality is right up there with this setup. I believe SPL is almost 120 db in car. Almost finished with a custom grill cover using the factore ring from the monsoon sub.

Next Step to swap out these tweeters with some vifa ring radiators........

Sounds like a hot setup you have going there Kevin. Seeing how this was your first post, try to introduce yourself in another post with location and post pics of your Vibe. This audio upgrade you're doing also needs some pics posted so us GenVibe members can see what you've done. Keep up the good work :D
