Clockspring Replacement

Post by jaredjones »

Hi All. I posted last week about my horn not working. I stumbled on this thread ( viewtopic.php?f=18&t=39574&p=471993&hil ... ag#p471993" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) and noticed that my airbag light was on as well, so I figured that is what is going on with mine as well. Has anyone done this before? Is it something fairly easy to do? I disconnected the battery and pulled the fuse for the airbag (pain in the (removed)) and began to take the steering wheel off. I got the covers of the steering column off but the only screws I could see that were on the wheel were the torque screws on which I think are the airbag screws. How do I get the wheel and airbag off? Do I need to take them both off to replace the the clockspring? Thanks

Can't remember if I ever took mine off ...

The attached PDF below shows the steps. For the clockspring you only need to do up to step 8. Not sure you need to do step 7, but you do have to pull the wheel off to get to the clockspring. The steps aren't that explicit, but maybe it will help.

After taking the steering wheel off and inspecting my clockspring, it looks like is going to need to be replaced. Any ideas on the best place and price to look for? Also, can I drive the car without the airbag on the wheel so I don't need to take that off and on more than I need to?

If the airbag light was on before you took it apart, it won't work anyway, so there is no point in re-installing it until you fix the problem.
