Anyone with a newer ScanGauge II?

Post by beemerphile1 »

I see that the latest version of the Scan Gauge II can now read Toyota transmission temperature. Anybody have one and tried the X-gauge?

I will have to upgrade my ScanGauge in order to try. The version mine is running will not work.

The Scangauge website says that it will now read transmission temperature on Toyotas that use the CANSF protocol. Matrix is listed as one of the vehicles that will work. I also see that all 2008 and newer GM vehicles use the CANSF protocol. So we're good. right?

For $25 I can send my unit in to have it upgraded but I want to be sure it will work for our Vibe's transmission temperature.

Both of our Vibes have ScangaugeII's in them. Mine being the manual tranny will do you no good BUT juniors has an auto and I'll check it out in a few days and let you know if that point is there :D

Thanks, I look forward to hearing your results. My understanding is that you need to have ScanGauge firmware version 4.0 or newer. The current firmware version is 4.02. My version is 3.XX. (don't remember exactly) Of course you also need to add the coding for the X-gauge.

The X-gauge coding is here;

The scangauge doesn't offer a plug in firmware update? That would make everything so much easier.

The unit has to mailed in with a $25 payment which covers the update and return postage.

OK so here's the scoop. My ScangaugeII has firmware 4.06 so it definitely will support the tranny temperature. Below are the series of snapshots that I took while programming the tranny feature.

As you can see on the final snapshot, the transmission temp comes up as -40'f. This usually indicates an error of some type. Does all this look good to you? I went with the General Toyota (CANSF) input information. Should I try the General Toyota (CANSF) 2010+ ??? Junior's 2009 Vibe Gt was manufactured in May 2008 so it should be new enough. What should I try next?

OK .... now I'm really lost. I went to Scnagauge's home page to look up what other possible codes that I could enter. I found this http://www.scangauge.com/support/gm-spe ... tion=print" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which I thought would be the ticket. I changed the values to represent what is shown on the chart and this is what the display shows: NO value displayed! :x

Any further thoughts why I'm still not pulling up the transmission temp ??? :?

You could try the 2010+, it wouldn't hurt. If I was doing it, I would try the first one you did since it is listed for 2008+ Matrix. I don't know why it reads -40, your codes look correct.

I wouldn't expect the GM code to work with our Toyota drivetrain.

I have no idea what to try next.

Did you try this with your manual or Junior's automatic?

I thought our cars did not have the trans temperature sensors on them. I checked on my android Torque app for it several months ago when I set it up, and it was not shown as an active sensor on the available list of sensors it found. It would be good information to have on the auto cars if it is available.

I did not try on my Vibe GT as it has the manual and very likely would not have any sensor to monitor it's 90W gear lube (or equivalent). I'll get back out to Juniors Vibe (the only one I've used in this test so far) and plug in the 2010 codes and see what happens. Maybe Thomas (trb) has a valid point being that there may not even be a automatic transmission sensor for the Scangauge to read? We'll see. Give me another day or so as the car is not home right now. He's a freshman in College and gone quite a bit. I'll check back later ................

Oh one other thing I want to add about the -40f reading that I initially got. My experiences with Building Automation Systems (Honeywell EBI, Johnson Controls Metasys, Trane tracer, Alerton, Automated Logic, and several other generic brands) is that when you have a defective temperature sensor, (which is an analog input) you'll get a known value telling you what the problem is. JCI Metasys uses 1000 ohm nickel sensors and when they are "open" they read -40f/c or close to this value. When they are "shorted, they read +255f or close to this value. So when I saw the -40 value displayed this could be ScanGauge telling me that "there's NO sensor out there ". Just another theory but possibly a valid one :?
