Transmission Fluid change at 50,000 miles . . .

Post by Nitetrain »

. . . sounds like a good idea? Right? Looks like other people are changing at 25,000 miles. I have a 2009 Pontiac Vibe 2.4 L Base.

75'000 miles
After reading this forum in the morning, I went out and had my transmission fluid changed. The mechanic said the fluid was VERY dirty, dark.
I waited too long. Vibe 1.8 Base. Don't got to 75K (you probably knew that)

Actually, now I looked at the owners manual. It said to change the trans fluid at every 60,000 miles. I am pretty sure if it is a good color red off the dip stick you will be OK. 2009 Pontiac vibe 2.4 l, TOYOTA T-IV or Mobile ATF 3309, 3.5 Liters.

Toyota does not use a filter, simply a screen. I change the fluid every 10K mile oil change. Its easy, pull the plug, dump it, replace the plug, pour in three more quarts, and run it and check it. Nice clean fluid, and if you keep doing this, it stays clean. Tranny has to love it.

I do the tranny fluid, filter, and gasket everytime I flush the tranny fluid. Might as well be safe than sorry. :)

When I bought my 09 Vibe 3 weeks ago; first thing I did was the 60,000 mile service. (mine had 61,000 miles) would rather spend a few dollars now instead of a lot later.

I'm at almost 96,000 miles. Dealer said no need until 100,000 miles.

I checked both of our owners manuals, and the 60K service is if you are towing or driving in traffic and temps over 90 or hills or commercial use. It sounds like I should change ours at 60K due to the summer heat! My son's has ~58K and does smell a bit burnt. Guess I'll change it before our trip to LA later this month.

The manual trans fluid change interval is 30K miles. Good info to know too.

Thanks for posting this up. I would not have thought about checking it otherwise. These cars need to last a long time for us!

Co-worker has a early '90's Toyota Previa "mini-van" or "multi-purpose vehicle", and it has nearly 400K on the original automatic transmission. The owner changes the trans fluid every oil change, and attributes that to the long life of the transmission.
