leak passenger side of rear differential

Post by jdk »

hey everyone new to the board. so i bought a 2003 awd vibe 130,000kms from a family member back in ontario, (i live in vancouver). Got my sister to take the car in and get it looked at before the long drive back said the car was in great shape but had right rear Hub and bearing assembly replaced 450.00. drove the car back no problems at all 5500kms took the scenic route. noticed on my last day walking back to the car 3 or 4 drops coming from the rear differential. so i got it home and didnt drive it for a couple days it left 3 or 4 drops when i parked it but nothing more so i thought maybe it was just from the breather being on such a heavy run just some drops falling off the diff . so i got my out of province saftey 700 bucks later, the guys says "you gotta leak at your differential dont drive it far". so ive just left it parked and im using my work truck. its coming outta the right side of the differential what should i be expecting to get fix/replaced? also its not making any bad noises from the rear im sure there is still fluid, but since its been parked theres been no drips.

sorry for the ramble i just would like some input

I could be wrong (and often am) but it seems to me that a few drips doesn't indicate an impending catastrophic failure. However, the AWD rear differential can fail from low oil. So if you do drive it, learn how to check and fill the oil level.

Maybe it's possible that the shop that did the hub replacement messed up the differential seal on that end somehow. I don't know how hard it is to replace that seal.

so i went to the mechanic, googled around and found decent reviews on this small shop on the other side of town. put the vibe up on the lift check the differential level it was fine and clean. he said its not like those seals to go like that, the axel has a little play but said its fine. cleaned the breather out and put me on my way free of charge. said bring it in for its next oil change and well check it over again

That sounds like a shop worth going back to
