Back in the saddle...

Post by Mark »

A brief history of no particular value or interest to anyone but me, but here goes anyway.

Bought my '04 base Frosty in January '06 with ~38k on the clock, Carfax said it was a repo sold at auction. I drove it most every day for years, and some really long road trips too. And dozens of 200 mile trips to Denver and back, most of them at 80 mph with the AC on. Averaged a low of 26 and high of 36 mpg, but mostly over 30. On 9/11/2010 I bought a new Ram 2500 crew cab CTD, and we traded my wife's '01 Caravan in. It had 131k and was starting to nickle and dime us some. So my wife started driving the Vibe (and consistently got 3-5 mpg per tank less than I averaged, but that's another story) and I drove the truck. But 3/4 ton diesels don't get good mileage, especially as daily drivers.

So I bought a '00 Corolla 5spd CE with 112k on it so I would have something to put liability on and list our h/s dropout teenager on, and for him to drive to work if he every looked, and for me to drive to work when he was sleeping till noon. 36 mpg average, power door locks and window, A/C, nice little car. Then he totaled it. Then I bought another '00 Corolla but this one had 145k, burns a quart of oil every 6-800 miles, and is a VE with a 3spd auto. Still a decent little car that gets 32-34 average.

This week we bought my wife a new Honda CR-V, and I'm parking the Corolla (son moved away but I want to keep it in case he comes back. the last of his accidents and tickets won't clear for another 2+ years). The truck stays in the garage most of the time, and I'm back to the '04 Vibe Frosty as my DD. I missed it, and it's good to be back in the saddle. She has 130k on the clock now, and still almost perfect. The only thing I've ever replaced is the front wheel bearings, and today I fixed the passenger window clunking. I fixed the driver side years ago but the other side was ok at that time. Now my wife says the pass side has been making the clunk noise for a long time, she just never bothered to tell me. *sigh*
