What are small speaker-looking things near rearview mirrors?

Not a big do-it-yourselfer, as you can tell.

What are those things? There's one on each side of car, sort of near the rearview mirrors. Look like speakers or tweeters or something... anybody know? I'm looking to do some modification on the sound system and was wondering.

Could they be contributing to the general shitty/scratchy/ "speakers are blown out" type of sound I get if I'm listening to the radio and DON'T have the sound completely coming from the rear speakers?... Or is it just the front speakers that gotta go?
