ticking noise from dash

Post by cooter »

I have a 2003 Vibe. I've recently started hearing a ticking noise coming from behind the dash. It occurs when the key is placed in the "on" position. The engine does not need to be running.

It is irregular. ie: tick....tick....tick.................tick..tick...................tick..........tick...tick
It sounds very similar to the turn signal indicator, other than the irregular nature. Sound like it's coming from behind the center of the dash, near the top.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you pressed the recirculate air button? Most of the time that will stop the noise if it is a broken gear. It is a very common problem on the cars. There was a new thread on it just yesterday. The gear in the AC recirculate solenoid breaks and causes the motor to keep trying to operate the door.

I will give that a try. Thanks!

My '03 Base Vibe does the same thing, pressing the recirculate button definitely shuts down the noise.

'trb' can you direct me to the thread you mentioned about this issue, would like to have at fixing it and i'm interested in what everyone is saying. Thanks.

Yes, pressing recirculate stopped the noise on my car also.

So, is this a repair I can make myself? Link to thread with instructions?

Thanks!

Wish I saw your post before I got in there, tool selection is very important!

I was able to fix mine by turning the broken teeth 180 degrees. Not difficult with the right tools.

Careful when opening actuator to not break the black tabs, I used toothpicks to help release the tabs then pried open with flat head screwdriver.
