Color Suggestion for my Shadow Vibe

Post by Vaggeto »

Alright, below is my car and here's what I'm thinking.
  • I'm planning to do a 27% or 35% tint all around.
  • Trying to decide on whether or not I should paint or vinyl overlay my badges. I'm thinking either black or dark carbon fiber in all.
  • I want to do a rear top and/or rear mid spoiler. I'm currently preferring the top one.
  • Now when it comes to color of spoiler(s)... I'm finding Abyss black ones much easier than Shadow ones on the used market. What do you think about black?
  • I want to paint my front calipers red to match the red outline on my wheels. Most likely the drums on the back will be black, maybe with some slight red accent.
  • My side mid-door protectors are pretty good, but the driver door one just recently got scraped pretty good by another car. I was thinking of mending this somehow and painting these black as well. Not sure on this one.
  • Lastly, most likely some red accents in the engine bay such as the VVT lettering, fusebox, exhaust cover, and new horns.
But... I'm looking for input and suggestions as well if you think something else might be better. What do you think?

Thanks!

^_^ I was thinking the Caliper and the outside venting on the rotor. With the rear drums, yes... definitely not fully red. I was thinking maybe the outside ring or something, which would match the rotors. But definitely not sure on that one.

My main concerns are with the Abyss black spoiler(s) and the badges.

I was thinking that accent line that runs across the car could also be changed somehow. It was light gray/white but now it's all cracked etc.

Thanks!

Definitely the top spoiler, I'm not too big a fan of the mid spoiler though. Black would go with your tint and roof rail end caps, and hey, if it's much cheaper for a black one, you can make up the difference by painting it later if you feel like it.

As for the blacking of the badges if you go that route, we're all fans of Plasti-Dip and you can peel it off if you want to try something different. Carbon vinyl would also be nice, that one's entirely up to you!
You could also de-badge or partial de-badge your hatch if you were so inclined.

I'd leave the drums all black, or even dark gray. I went the dark gray route on mine and they blended GREAT with the Shadow. You can see it in my garage thread, through the link in my signature.

Regarding the mid-door protectors, again, plasti-dip is your best friend for testing with reversible results. I think they look better body color, personally.

Red engine bay accents: A million times yes! If you're looking for new horns, I'm a fan of Hella (or the Sickspeed ebay alternative) Supertone horns. I'm very satisfied with the look and sound of mine. I might leave the exhaust cover black though. K&N also makes red short ram intakes for our Vibes and one of those would look right at home.

Thanks! Your car looks great. What paint and color did you use on your drums? They look great. Also, how long ago did you do it and how is it holding up? From what I've read the plain caliper paint doesn't do great on the calipers. So I'm looking at this epoxy that a few have recommended.

Yah I'd likely do only top, possibly top AND mid for the right deal. I was thinking black would work as well due to the other black accent on the car. Just to verify, did you paint your door handles black? =They look great! I'm guessing you used plasti-dip? Does Plasti-dip really work that well and come off easily? Does that mean it doesn't last too long?

I noticed you mentioned Sickspped horns in your thread at $40 and a total of about $75. I'm seeing Hellas for only $52 shipped though, with a relay. Any concerns or reason these weren't used? Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/HELLA-003399801-S ... 555&sr=8-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Are Short Ram Intakes okay to paint? I'm considering buying a used green one and would want to paint it red. Would it need any high temp or special paint due to being next to the engine?

Thanks!

One question I did have... when using lens tint on the brake housings etc. Does it hurt the value of the car and if you replace bulbs with bright silver stars and don't go too dark, can you maintain your original brightness?

Also, what bulb size does the license plate light require?

Thanks again!

I like the idea of the black upper spoiler, red calipers, vinyl for badges http://www.grafxwerks.com/shop.php?part=VIBA1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Can't wait to see how this progresses!

I wish I still had the can lying around for my brake drum paint. I remember it was high-temperature paint and it was gray, but I don't remember the paint code or anything. I'll ask my dad later if he remembers. They've held up pretty good, on year three so far and they're starting to show rust in a few spots, because of harsh winters. If I were to do anything differently, I'd add a few more coats of paint just to be safe. Epoxy sounds like a safe bet, I'm wondering if I should do the same as I'm planning on painting my calipers red very soon.

My door handles actually came in black (It may be because my car also came with unpainted body cladding), but I'm glad you think it looks good! Many members here have used plasti-dip with great success and have had long-lasting results, as long as you do it right the first time. It sticks on there good, but once you get tired of it it's easy to peel off too, it makes a rubberized coating.

The Hellas are great, I was just being cheap. I couldn't find them on Amazon.ca, and if I added the shipping to the American one (or the various ebay listings) it would have come up to around 70$. I figured I'd give the cheaper ones a try, but either one would be great especially for that price!

After a quick Google search, it appears many people on many car forums have painted their intakes with great results. Just make sure you don't paint the MAF area, so tape that off, and preparation is key. The common method seems to be scuffing it with light grit sand paper, cleaning it with some kind of acetone-based solution, priming and/or painting with high-heat engine enamel or paint.

The license plate lights require a T10 base wedge bulb, I'll find you the How-To on the matter. I got my bulbs on eBay for about $10 shipped from Hong Kong, and it took about 5 minutes to change them out. VERY satisfied with the results. The ones I got were 15 SMD (Surface mounted diode) ones, they have three LED's per side, same as the ones Chadhgraves used.

I figure lens tint wouldn't hurt the value of your car, since if you use film you can remove it at will. I only plan on tinting the yellow mid-portion, so I shouldn't lose much brightness either, maybe a bit on the turn signals. Results are pending as I have to get my hands on a heat gun and a few things before attempting the diy, and brighter bulbs should in theory help regain whatever lost brightness (if any).

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! I'm on here fairly often and my mods list is always growing  Next in line is a shift knob (ordered), caliper paint, hatch debadge, and window tint if my student budget permits.

Ahhh well thanks for all of the information. If you find out about that paint please let me know!

I've got new rotors waiting to be put on and I figure it'd be much better to paint them when new.

Interesting regarding the door handles... I had no idea they came like that.

I think I'll go with the Hellas... gonna read up on it a bit more and then probably go for it at some point.

That's great to hear regarding the intake being paintable... mine will be a SRI, but it's green now and I think red will be much better.

Thanks for the information on the lights! I bought some yesterday for ~$7 shipped and am excited to put them in. I HATE the "Warm" yellow light and love the clean white hue. I may have to look into the reverse lights next.

I always saw lens tint as a spray, not so much a film. I'll have to read up more about it. Also I am interested in some debadging and window tint as well!

Looks like I might have to do a sample of the badge vinyl. None of their pictures say which color is being shown, which IMO makes them much less valuable.

Thanks again! Still open to suggestions.

I agree with the suggestion above - no real issues there.

But my first thought on seeing your car was that you should get that thing lowered! That's a lot of wheel gap you are sportin' there.

Retrofit hids are on the way!

I'm really thinking plastidip at this point on the badges though that way I can always reverse it if wanted and go with vinyl decals.
