Metal on Metal Grinding Sound at Start Up

Post by Caretaker »

Anyone else experience this sound at startup after the car (09 Vibe auto) has sat overnight? It does not happen all the time, but has happened about 10 times over the past 6 months. The metal on metal sound lasts for only a second when the car fires up, almost as though there is no oil reaching critical parts at the very start. The sound also sounds like a loose heat shield; same kind of noise. I had thought that it had to do with the fact that my valves have seemed louder than normal over the past year and that there may be a clearance issue. The loud valve (tick) quiets down after about a mile of driving. Any thoughts?

Toyota has a tsb on this. Something to do with the timing chain and camshaft sprockets. There's a thread on here about it.... somewhere.... somewhere...

I can't find it here... but here's the TSB: http://www.empirepao.com/tsb/T-SB-0087-09.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm tempted to print this off and take it to a GM dealer, see what they have to say about it. But then again... that means going to a GM dealer... and dealing with them!

I am having the same issue on my 2004 Vibe GT. At worst, the grinding seems to last for 30 seconds to a minute. Other days, it does not grind at all and sounds perfectly OK. I have not been able to pinpoint where the noise is coming from, but I do know that it is coming from the driver side. Anybody else having the same issues on an older model? Do you think this is the same problem as above? If so, what is the best plan of action to repair this?

I don't think so, Isn't the Vibe engine transverse mounted? That would put the timing chain on the passengers side.

Correct, its on the passenger side. However, the problem listed above is exactly how I would have described the situation i am experiencing and I thought it was worth a shot to see if anyone else has had similar issues
