Protecting new finish?

Post by Vibester »

I'm expecting to receive my new Satellite GT tomorrow. I've heard the opinions about waiting 6 mos, etc before waxing. My question is, given that the next 6 months will take me pretty much through winter, would it be advisable to use something like Nufinish to protect the car finish w/o waxing?TIA

I was concerned about this also, but I asked around (dealer serviceman, car detailer) and they all said that with nowaday technology you don't really have to wait to wax the finish. You could always buy a pure wax (non-abrasive/cleaner) at first.. and that should last you through part of the winter.Being that they bake the paint on the body and apply the clearcoat, it really isn't necessary.Anyone else with opinions on this??

quote:I have some sort of a fear of conventional wax.... Example ok.... Father used a recommended Turtle wax for is Jimmy and right after apply it and buffing, you could see that the clearcoat had been removed.... and running you finger on the surface left you finger blue (color of the car). That must have been that TurtleWax ColorCure color-matching wax that is supposed to wax and fill in scratches and such with the color of the car. It may be good for older vehicles where it may help fill age-scratches and paint defects, but definately not on newer vehicles. This is a pic of that TurtleWax ColorCure stuff:If you are going to use a cleaner wax, make sure you take the time to apply a pure wax (like carnuba) after that to finish the seal.

Does carnuba wax really need to be applied? I've always used Nu-Finish, or some other "Polish", rather than wax. It lasts longer, but I'm told it doesnt protect or shine as well.

No, it doesn't need to be applied, but it can only help. Anything is better than nothing.I was always told that if you were to use a Cleaner or Polish on the paint, then you should always go back over it with a wax in order to add a layer of protection to the paint. Makes the polish/shine last alot longer and protect the paint from water marks, bird crap, etc.I use alot of Meguiar's products. They work great and they have a nice selection. You can follow their steps for paint protection, polishing, etc. at their website here: Click meOn my Vibe, I initially (within the first couple days) used Meguiar's Cleaner Wax and then waited a few hours, then applied the Carnuba Wax. I usually always follow that technique when waxing my vehicles. Then inbetween waxings, you can buy the quick detailing spray wax that just sprays on and wipes off. Makes detailing easy and fast.

I even keep a bottle of quick detailer, a bottle of Windex and a rag in the driver side storage compartment in the rear cargo area at all times.

When I purchased the Vibe, I got the clear coat on it...now they say I shouldn't wax my car, but products like Meguiar and Mother's say it is safe to use their products even with the clear coat on my car....does it?

Clear coat was made to keep the finish looking new longer...especially if you are lazy and dont wax your cars. Even with a clearcoat...you should always use wax or polish to help protect against chemicals, salt, tar, and scratches. This is why most new wax/polish is safe to use on clearcoat...because you still should use it.
